Just days after promising comedian Kafengo a government job during the memorial service for his late friend and fellow comedian KK Mwenyewe, Dennis Itumbi, who heads the Creative Economy sector, has now officially met with Kafengo to finalize the arrangement.
In photos shared from their meeting, Itumbi confirmed that Kafengo, together with his videographer Mike, would be joining his team to help develop new content platforms. However, he clarified that both of them would still be allowed to continue with their personal content creation projects independently.
What stood out most in Itumbi’s statement was his decision to personally support Kafengo and Mike by sharing a portion of his own salary with them. “I just had a meeting with Kafengo — he’s intelligent, grounded, and holds a degree in Mathematics with Computing.
With that kind of background, expect smart and accurate approaches as he tackles issues in the content creation world,” Itumbi wrote. “He and Mike are joining us to create new platforms. For now, we’ll share my salary, and they’ll also be free to continue running their own side hustles.”
This follows Itumbi’s earlier public promise during KK Mwenyewe’s emotional send-off, where he acknowledged Kafengo’s creativity and long-time collaboration with the late comedian. Itumbi said that offering Kafengo a job was part of a bigger plan to nurture and boost Kenya’s digital content creation scene.
“Kafengo was closely working with KK Mwenyewe, and many people on social media have suggested that I bring him on board,” Itumbi stated to applause from some in the crowd. “I’ve made the decision to work with him and give him a job starting Monday so he can help us address digital content creation issues.”
Despite Itumbi’s warm tribute and the announcement of new opportunities in the digital economy, some attendees at the memorial were critical of the government’s overall approach.
Still, Itumbi used the platform to make further commitments, including a pledge to support Kenyan TikTok creators by ensuring they are able to monetize their content.
The late KK Mwenyewe had captured national attention with his clever skits imitating former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Sadly, he passed away on July 14 after a short illness while undergoing treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
Through this new move, Itumbi seems determined to carry on KK Mwenyewe’s legacy by uplifting rising talents like Kafengo and helping build a stronger foundation for Kenya’s digital creators.
