Kalonzo Denies Claims of Appointment by President Ruto for AU Peace Mission in Côte d’Ivoire
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has come out strongly to deny widespread claims that President William Ruto had appointed him to a diplomatic role in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The reports, which went viral on social media on Wednesday, August 6, alleged that Kalonzo had been selected to head a peace dialogue mission in Côte d’Ivoire ahead of the country’s upcoming elections. The post also claimed he would represent the African Union (AU) in the West African nation.
However, Kalonzo addressed the matter on Thursday afternoon, labeling the claims as completely fake. He firmly dismissed the social media post as misinformation and insisted that it was part of a wider smear campaign by his political rivals, aimed at undermining his credibility and portraying him as aligning with the Ruto government.
The fake post was made to look legitimate by including a forged signature that was wrongly attributed to Mahamoud Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The post further tried to give the impression of truth by referencing Kalonzo’s previous diplomatic involvement in Africa, stating: “This mission builds on Musyoka’s extensive continental experience, including his successful mediation role in South Sudan and his prior shuttle diplomacy efforts in Côte d’Ivoire.”
This misleading information stirred up confusion and concern among many Kenyans, especially within the Azimio coalition, prompting demands for Kalonzo to clarify his position and respond to the rumors about his alleged involvement with the current government.
In his response, the former Vice President strongly rejected the claims and reiterated his loyalty to the Kenyan people. He maintained that he had no intention of working with the Ruto-led administration, which he described as oppressive.
“Absolutely fake! I will always stand with the people of Kenya. I will not dialogue with those who abduct young Kenyans,” Kalonzo stated on his official social media page, making reference to ongoing concerns about human rights abuses and abductions.
Kalonzo is a key figure in the United Opposition team that has been openly challenging the current regime. He has been consistently vocal in accusing President Ruto’s government of undermining democracy, intimidating independent institutions, and failing to uphold the rule of law.
Just five days before issuing this denial, Kalonzo had lashed out at the government during a public address on Sunday, August 3. He criticised President Ruto for violating constitutional principles and using state power to silence dissent.
He also took a swipe at Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s youth empowerment programmes, claiming they were nothing more than a public relations stunt designed to favor political elites rather than help ordinary Kenyans.
“This employment initiative is a misuse of office. They think they can bribe Kenyans with promises. But they’re wrong—they won’t succeed,” Kalonzo declared during his speech.
The Wiper party leader’s strong stance and recent statements show he remains firmly opposed to President Ruto’s leadership and committed to fighting for the rights and freedoms of Kenyans.
