Murkomen Orders Gachagua to Record Statement Over Terrorism Allegations Upon Return from US
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will be required to record a statement immediately after arriving back in Kenya from the United States.
This follows controversial remarks Gachagua made abroad, in which he claimed there were terrorism plots involving senior leaders in the country.
Speaking on Saturday during the Keiyo South Economic Empowerment Program, Murkomen stressed that Gachagua must explain, in detail, the claims he has been making while on his US tour.
The CS insisted that if the former DP truly has information about terrorist meetings, he must share it with investigators rather than using it as a political tool.
“He thinks he can go to America, talk about terrorism, and use that to get political support,” Murkomen said.
“But I want to be very clear — since he says he has information, knows what is happening, and even claims to have an agent holding meetings with Al-Shabaab, as soon as he steps into Kenya, he will be required to record a statement.
He must tell us exactly what meetings he is talking about and who these terrorists are,” he added.
Murkomen’s directive came after Gachagua publicly accused President William Ruto of allegedly meeting Al-Shabaab militia leaders during his recent visit to Mandera County.
The Interior CS accused the former DP of damaging Kenya’s international reputation by making such serious allegations while abroad.
He further criticised Gachagua for treating matters of national security lightly and questioned his credibility as a former senior leader.
“It is embarrassing. How did such a person even get the opportunity to serve as Deputy President? It is unbelievable,” Murkomen remarked. “When you hold public office, you must act with responsibility and respect for the country.”
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who spoke at the same event, also demanded that Gachagua be compelled to record a statement over what he termed as “damaging remarks” that could compromise Kenya’s security.
“We are asking the relevant authorities to ensure that anyone who claims to have information about terrorists or criminals is held accountable. They should give that information to assist in investigations,” Kindiki said.
Earlier, Mandera Senator Ali Roba had also urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to arrest Gachagua over the allegations, describing his statements as a desperate move to mislead the public for political gain.
Gachagua has been in the US since July 9 on a planned two-month tour, where he has been meeting Kenyans living abroad and engaging with international partners.
However, his remarks during the trip have sparked political tension back home, with several leaders accusing him of crossing the line on sensitive national security matters.
