Drama in Kakamega as President Ruto Marks International Youth Day Amid Protests from Comrades

President William Ruto today graced the International Youth Day 2025 celebrations at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in Kakamega County, but the event took a dramatic turn when an angry university comrade interrupted his speech.

The celebrations, themed “Youth as Drivers of Innovation and Sustainable Growth,” had drawn hundreds of students, youth leaders, innovators, and government officials.

The President used the occasion to outline his government’s plans for empowering young people, including the launch of a Youth Enterprise Investment Bank with a starting capital of Ksh 9.75 billion.

The bank, set to begin operations before the end of the year, will provide affordable financing, credit guarantees, and training for young entrepreneurs across Kenya.

He also unveiled the government’s NYOTA (National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement) programme, which will distribute Ksh 50,000 to individual youths from September and allocate Ksh 5 billion to support 70 youths in each ward nationwide.

The initiative aims to boost business ventures, mentorship, market access, and access to government procurement opportunities.

However, the speeches were briefly disrupted when a visibly angry comrade stood up and shouted, “Ruto, kwani unafiki! Sisi comrades hatuna njaa!” — loosely translated as “Ruto, why the hypocrisy! We comrades are not hungry!” The student accused the government of focusing on promises instead of addressing what he claimed were more urgent issues affecting young people.

Security officers quickly moved in to contain the situation, and the President continued with his address. The incident sparked murmurs and mixed reactions from the crowd, with some cheering the comrade’s boldness while others criticized the interruption as disrespectful.

Despite the disruption, the event proceeded with exhibitions from youth-led projects, performances from local artists, and recognition awards for outstanding youth achievers. The President also toured innovation booths and interacted with beneficiaries of government youth programs.

The Kakamega celebrations are part of the national observance of International Youth Day, aimed at highlighting the role of young people in driving Kenya’s development and economic growth.
