Government Announces Six Official Fan Zones for Harambee Stars vs Zambia CHAN Showdown
The government has unveiled six official fan zones across Nairobi ahead of the Harambee Stars’ decisive African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group A match against Zambia this Sunday.
This move comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reduced the capacity of Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, by 40 percent — from 45,000 to 27,000 seats — due to safety and logistical concerns.
With thousands of supporters now unable to get tickets, the Ministry of Sports has set up alternative venues where fans can watch the game on big screens in a safe and exciting atmosphere.
The Six Official Fan Zones
The designated areas include:
- Uhuru Park – A section of the park in Nairobi has been reserved for fans to gather and watch the match live on Sunday, August 17.
- Lucky Summer (Ngomongo Area, behind Kasarani Stadium) – Supporters in this neighborhood will have a dedicated space to enjoy the game.
- Dandora Stadium – This venue will host fans for a lively public viewing experience.
- Utalii (Stima Club) – A specific section here will be set up for supporters to follow the action.
- Jacaranda Grounds – Fans from nearby areas can gather here to watch the game together.
- Kibera DC Grounds – Residents of Kibera can enjoy the match at this specially prepared location.
Government’s Plan for a Stadium-Like Experience
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya made the announcement on Wednesday, August 13, after holding a meeting with top security officials, including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, in Nairobi.
Mvurya explained that the zones were carefully chosen to be in strategic neighborhoods so that fans could have an atmosphere similar to being inside the stadium.
“We have created fan zones across Nairobi with large screens so that those who cannot get into the stadium can still enjoy the game in a safe and lively setting,” CS Mvurya said.
He assured the public that each fan zone would have adequate police presence to maintain order and ensure the safety of all spectators.
Strict Security and Ticketing Measures
In addition to the fan zones, the government has introduced strict measures for the stadium. Only fans with valid electronic tickets will be allowed inside. Supporters have also been urged to arrive at least five hours before kick-off to avoid congestion at the gates.
On Tuesday, Local Organising Committee Chairman Nicholas Musonye reminded fans to buy tickets only from the authorised online vendor. By the end of the day, all tickets for the match had sold out.
Why Fan Zones Matter
The concept of fan zones is not new — for decades, they have been used in major football tournaments around the world to bring supporters together in public viewing spaces.
These zones allow those without tickets to still enjoy the excitement of the game in a community setting.
With the CHAN tournament being one of the biggest football events Kenya has ever hosted, many had expected such zones to be available from the opening match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
While the Sports Ministry has not confirmed if the initiative will continue beyond Sunday’s match, there is a strong possibility it could be extended, especially if the Harambee Stars advance further in the tournament.
A Decisive Game for Harambee Stars
Kenya currently sits at the top of a tough Group A, which includes Angola, the DRC, Zambia, and two-time CHAN champions Morocco. A win against Zambia would secure Harambee Stars a place in the quarter-finals as group winners.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed that the match will kick off at 3:00 pm EAT on Sunday. All eyes will be on Kasarani and the six fan zones, where thousands of Kenyans will be cheering their team towards victory.
