Former Siaya County Clerk Shot Dead Outside His Resort in Kisumu County
Former Siaya County Assembly Clerk Felix Isaac Olwero has died after being shot by police outside his Whitehouse Resort in Seme, Kisumu County.
The tragic shooting, which took place in the early hours of Monday, is being treated as a suspected case of mistaken identity.
According to reports, the 50-year-old Olwero, who owned the resort, had rushed out to respond to a distress call about a suspected break-in at his premises. However, police officers who arrived at the scene mistakenly targeted him, believing he was one of the intruders.
Officers from Kombewa Police Station had reportedly responded to an emergency call from the resort’s manager, Sandra Okech. They positioned themselves at the back side of the property.
Soon after, they noticed a group of six men emerging from a nearby bushy area, allegedly carrying pangas and other crude weapons. Police claim that when one of the men reportedly charged towards them, an officer opened fire.
Sadly, it was later confirmed that the person who was shot was Olwero himself. He had apparently left his house and gone outside to find out what was happening and to monitor the situation.
This incident has caused outrage among residents, local leaders, and Olwero’s family, who are accusing the officers of acting recklessly and without proper verification. Many people are now calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the killing, saying justice must be served.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation to uncover exactly what happened. Olwero’s body was taken to the Kombewa Subcounty Referral Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.
The former county clerk was a well-known figure in both Siaya and Kisumu counties. His sudden death has left many people in shock and mourning – including friends, relatives, and colleagues who described him as a respected public servant and businessman.
Police officers have not yet clarified whether any of the actual suspects connected to the suspected break-in were arrested during or after the shooting.
It is also worth mentioning that in May 2024, members of the Siaya County Assembly unanimously voted to remove Olwero from his position as Clerk of the House. He was removed on accusations of gross violation of the Constitution, misconduct, and other allegations.
As the investigation continues, many Kenyans are demanding justice and accountability, insisting that such incidents of alleged police negligence should never be tolerated.
