Ruto Threatens to Arrest MPs Over Bribery Scandal
President William Ruto has announced a bold move to arrest and prosecute all leaders — especially Members of Parliament (MPs) and Senators — who have been demanding or receiving bribes to do their work in Parliament.
Speaking on Monday during a joint parliamentary group meeting between leaders from Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the President spoke angrily and firmly warned lawmakers over serious reports that many of them, especially in various parliamentary committees, have been taking bribes to influence important decisions and bills.
Ruto said he gets raw intelligence reports regularly and is well-informed that some lawmakers are always collecting bribes.
According to him, some MPs and Senators have turned Parliament into a money-making ground, receiving money in the name of Parliament, yet that money ends up in their own pockets instead of benefitting the country.
“They are collecting money in the name of Parliament, and sometimes that money never gets to Parliament. Instead, it ends up in the pockets of a few individuals. We are not going to shame them; we are going to arrest them,” Ruto stated.
He also mentioned the Anti-Money Laundering Bill that was passed in Parliament recently, saying that some people were using cheques to try and influence how MPs would vote on the bill.
The President gave an example of a Senator who reportedly received Ksh150 million to influence a decision in the House, although he refused to reveal the name.
“I consume raw intelligence daily. Do you know that some MPs here received up to Ksh10 million to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill? Did you receive that money?” Ruto asked emotionally.
He added that there are people who are ruining the image and credibility of Parliament, and unfortunately, this money does not help Parliament or the citizens — it only enriches a few greedy individuals.
He showed frustration over the increasing level of corruption and warned that this trend must stop immediately.
President Ruto emphasized that the government is ready to take strong action and eliminate this corruption entirely.
He made it clear that no one will be protected, no matter their political party or position in government. The head of state stressed that the government is serious and will ensure that every guilty lawmaker faces justice.
This is not the first time Ruto has raised the issue. Last week, he made similar remarks while speaking at the National Devolution Conference on Wednesday, August 13.
At that event, he harshly criticized Parliament for asking for bribes and said that lawmakers must be held accountable for their actions.
In summary, Ruto has declared war on corrupt MPs and Senators, warning that arrests are coming soon. He wants to restore the dignity of Parliament and ensure that leaders stop using their positions for personal gain.
