Senator Vows to Push for Duale’s Impeachment Over Tribal Remarks
Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has issued a strong warning that he might spearhead the impeachment of Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale over comments he made that were perceived as tribal and divisive — especially towards the Mount Kenya region.
On Monday, August 18, Senator Ledama accused Duale of making statements that suggested the Mt. Kenya community considers itself superior to others. He said such comments are dangerous, promote tribalism, and have no place in a Cabinet Secretary’s language.
According to Ledama, only a politician would dare to make such remarks and get away with it — but for a Cabinet Secretary, impeachment might be the best response.
“Hon Duale, you are a Cabinet Secretary and a policymaker, not a tribal politician,” Ledama said firmly. “This weekend’s shareholding talk is pure poison that drags Kenya back to the dark days of 2007 and spreads fear. We impeached DP Gachagua for the same divisive nonsense.”
He added that it is frustrating to see Kenya trying to unite, only for leaders like Duale to pull the country backwards. He emphasized that if Duale thinks he is above the law, he is mistaken, saying impeachment might be the only way to show that the government belongs to all Kenyans.
“Enough of this tribal madness! Government is for ALL Kenyans, not just your sub-tribe,” Ledama stressed.
Duale Defends His Remarks
While speaking on Saturday, August 16, at an event in Balambala, Garissa County, Duale said his words were being misunderstood. He insisted that there is no community, region, or religion that is superior to others in Kenya, as the Constitution guarantees equality.
“There is no superior community, region, or religion here in Kenya. The Constitution guarantees equality,” said Duale.
He also argued that President William Ruto is being unfairly attacked for his efforts to unite Kenyans, claiming some people are twisting his agenda for their own political interests. These remarks, however, provoked strong reactions across the political scene.
Moses Kuria Also Responds Sharply
Former senior economic adviser to the President, Moses Kuria, also criticized Aden Duale, saying the CS was unfairly profiling the Central Kenya region.
Kuria also mentioned Tiaty MP William Kamket and Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, accusing them of making similar remarks. He complained that although not all Mount Kenya leaders were involved in tribal politics, they were being wrongly grouped together as if the whole community is guilty.
“In recent days, I have listened to leaders claim that a certain community thinks it is superior to others — from Kamket to Mandago and now Aden Duale in Balambala,” Kuria wrote online.
He added:
“Some of us have openly rejected the return of this country to negative tribal politics. We will also firmly resist the unfair condemnation of an entire community.”
A Growing Rift
This latest political tension highlights how sensitive ethnic talk remains in Kenya’s politics. Leaders like Ledama Olekina argue that such careless statements can inflame tensions and take the country backward. Meanwhile, Duale and others claim they are defending the president’s unity agenda.
As the debate continues, many Kenyans are watching closely to see whether the Senator will indeed file an impeachment motion — and whether more leaders will step in to condemn or support Duale’s remarks.
