Jessica Weku Wesonga, the Chief Officer in charge of Livestock, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries in Kakamega County, has passed away, marking the second loss of a senior county officer in the last two months.
The death of Wesonga was confirmed by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa in a statement released on Tuesday, August 26. The governor, however, did not disclose the cause of her death.
“I am deeply shocked by the passing of Jessica Weku Wesonga. Until her untimely death, she served diligently as the Chief Officer for Livestock, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries,” Governor Barasa said.
He added, “With great difficulty, we commend her spirit to the Lord. On behalf of my family, the County Government, and the people of Kakamega, I extend heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. We pray that they find strength during this very difficult time.”
Wesonga joined Kakamega County Government in 2022 as the Chief Officer for Water and Sanitation Services, only three months after Barasa assumed office as governor. She was later transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture’s Department of Fisheries Development, where she continued to serve with dedication.
Governor Barasa described Wesonga as a versatile and committed professional whose contributions in both departments left a significant impact. He noted that her passing created a considerable gap within the county’s administration.
“Her professional approach to government operations allowed her to build strong and productive relationships with development partners. With her passing, the county has lost a dependable team player, a loyal worker, and an inspiration to the youth,” Barasa added.
This announcement comes just two months after the governor confirmed the death of another county chief officer, Doreen Amwoga, who served as the Chief Officer of Education.
Amwoga joined the county government on November 1, 2014, initially as a Ward Administrator. She was promoted to Sub-County Administrator on July 30, 2020, and later appointed acting Chief Officer of Education on July 7, 2022.
Following her appointment, Barasa assigned Amwoga as Chief Officer for County Administration before reassigning her to act as Chief Officer for Social Services, Youth, Gender, and Culture on December 8, 2024. On March 8, 2025, she was officially reappointed as Chief Officer of Education.
In a statement on August 10, Governor Barasa praised Amwoga for her dedication, highlighting the crucial role she played in supporting her colleagues and the county administration.
“On behalf of my family, the County Government, and the people of Kakamega, I express my sincere condolences to Ms. Amwoga’s family. We, as a government, assure the family of our support during this very challenging period,” Barasa said.
