Mixed Reactions as Kenya Sends Community Elders to Somalia to Negotiate Release of Five Abducted Chiefs

The Kenyan government has deployed a group of community elders to Somalia in an effort to negotiate the release of five chiefs who were kidnapped earlier this week.

The chiefs were abducted on Monday while assessing the security situation in Mandera County ahead of President William Ruto’s planned visit to the region.

According to intelligence reports, the captives were taken across the border into Somalia, where they are now believed to be held by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Jilib, a known militant stronghold.

The ongoing negotiations are reportedly taking place within the same area.

The five missing chiefs—Mohammed Adawa, Mohammed Hassan Kulmia, Abdi Hassan Suraw, Mohammed Noor Hache, and assistant chief Ibrahim Gabow—were on official duty when they were intercepted.

Their mission was to travel to Elwak for a security meeting in preparation for President Ruto’s tour of the North Eastern region. However, they were ambushed, taken hostage, and their vehicle was driven toward Somalia.

This development has sparked intense debate among Kenyans on social media, with many questioning the government’s decision to send community elders for the negotiations.

One concerned citizen commented, “Why is the government negotiating with terrorists? Ordinary Kenyans were kidnapped, and instead of taking decisive action, the government sends elders to speak with the abductors? This is nothing but political drama ahead of 2027!”

Another user questioned the strategy, stating, “How do these elders know exactly where to find these militants? What measures are in place to guarantee their safety? Instead of sending negotiators, why didn’t the government work with Somali authorities as per international protocols?”

The debate continues as Kenyans demand clarity on the government’s approach to handling security threats and hostage situations.
