Nairobi MCAs Launch Impeachment Bid Against Governor Sakaja
The leadership of Nairobi City County is facing a fresh storm after a section of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) declared plans to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The lawmakers accuse him of incompetence and failure to deliver on promises he made to Nairobi residents during his 2022 election campaign.
The move to send the governor home was ignited during a Speaker’s Kamkunji held on Tuesday, August 26. The closed-door meeting, chaired by Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Ken Ngondi, brought together dozens of MCAs who expressed frustration over Sakaja’s style of leadership.
According to the disgruntled ward representatives, the governor has not only ignored the pressing needs of Nairobians but has also abandoned most of the development pledges he made before taking office. Many MCAs said the governor’s administration had left citizens feeling abandoned and disappointed.
Plans for Formal Impeachment
After hours of deliberations, the MCAs resolved to formalise their decision in a retreat scheduled for Naivasha on Tuesday, September 2. At the retreat, assembly leaders are expected to officially begin collecting signatures to support the impeachment motion.
South B MCA Chege Waithera confirmed that the decision was reached unanimously, pointing out that both the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) members were united in the push.
“The majority of members feel that Governor Sakaja has not only lost touch with ordinary Nairobians, but he has also lost the confidence of this assembly,” Waithera explained.
She noted that residents across different wards had been questioning why many projects had stalled, with little or no progress being made under Sakaja’s leadership.
MCAs Cite Poor Service Delivery
Waithera accused Sakaja’s government of failing to deliver even the most basic services expected by Nairobi residents. From garbage collection to stalled infrastructure projects, the MCAs claimed that the county government had fallen short of its duties.
The legislators further alleged that the governor’s support within the assembly had dwindled drastically, with less than a quarter of members now standing by him. This, they argued, was a clear sign of his declining political grip.
“Signature collection will start very soon. We already had 96 members attend the Kamkunji, which is way above the threshold needed to initiate the process,” Waithera said. Her statement was strongly backed by Nairobi CBD MCA Mwaniki Kwenya, who equally criticised Sakaja.
Kwenya accused the governor of shifting his political loyalty, pointing to his growing closeness with certain ODM leaders.
He argued that Sakaja’s new alignment with ODM was influenced by the party’s recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kenya Kwanza government, a move that many MCAs believe has weakened the county’s leadership direction.
Sakaja Joins List of Governors Facing Ouster
If the process gains momentum, Governor Sakaja will become the latest county boss to face possible impeachment, joining his Kericho counterpart Eric Mutai, whose removal is already at an advanced stage.
Governor Mutai is set to stand trial before the full Senate after efforts to create a special committee to investigate his case collapsed on Wednesday, August 20. His fate now lies in the hands of senators, who will debate and vote on his impeachment.
For Governor Sakaja, the coming days will be critical. With the Naivasha retreat expected to kickstart the collection of signatures, the MCAs’ push could quickly escalate into a full impeachment process, putting the future of his administration in doubt.
