All You Need to Know About Multi-Billion International Film Being Shot in Kenya
If you love movies and follow celebrity updates, you may have noticed that Hollywood actress Priyanka Chopra recently visited Kenya. What many people may not know is that her visit was not just for leisure — she was in the country to film scenes for a groundbreaking international production.
This movie, already being described as one of the biggest to ever come out of Asia, has chosen Kenya as one of its main filming destinations. Priyanka Chopra is playing the lead role, making the project even more glamorous.
The film, titled Globetrotter, is being directed by the legendary Indian filmmaker Srisaila Sri Rajamouli, a name well-known across the world for delivering record-breaking blockbusters. Joining Chopra on set are two celebrated Indian superstars — Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran — making this a dream cast for film lovers.
The project is massive in scale, with a budget of $116 million (about Ksh14.9 billion), putting it among the most expensive and ambitious movies ever produced in Asia.
What the Film is About
According to the producers, Globetrotter is an action-adventure movie inspired by legendary films like the Indiana Jones series and classic African adventure stories. The plot follows Mahesh Babu, who plays the role of a fearless explorer embarking on a daring mission across mysterious and untamed landscapes.
His journey is filled with danger, from battling harsh natural conditions to facing powerful enemies determined to stop him. At the heart of the film lies a quest to uncover a long-lost secret that has the potential to change the entire world.
The storyline promises thrilling chases, ancient myths, breathtaking landscapes, and non-stop suspense.
Why Kenya Was Chosen
Kenya was picked as the main African setting after filmmakers carried out extensive scouting across East Africa. Nearly 95 per cent of the movie’s African scenes will be shot in Kenya, a decision that highlights the country’s unmatched natural beauty and filming potential.
Some of the breathtaking filming locations include the world-famous Maasai Mara, the scenic Naivasha, the stunning Amboseli, and the rugged wilderness of Samburu.
These locations will allow the film to showcase Kenya’s diverse landscapes, from wide savannah plains and wildlife reserves to lakes, mountains, and cultural heritage sites.
During her stay, Priyanka Chopra not only focused on filming but also shared behind-the-scenes clips on social media, giving her fans a glimpse into the production. She also made time to tour Kenya’s tourist attractions, further drawing global attention to the country.
Scale of the Production
The production team consisted of about 120 crew members, who spent two weeks in Kenya for the shoot. With such a large team, the project has been described as one of India’s most ambitious cinematic ventures.
The film is scheduled to premiere in over 120 countries, with a potential reach of more than a billion viewers worldwide. Once released, Globetrotter is expected to set new records for Indian cinema in terms of scale, reach, and cultural impact.
The filmmakers are planning to release the first official look of the movie in November, which is expected to generate massive global buzz.
Collaboration with Kenya
On Tuesday, September 2, director S. S. Rajamouli met with Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, Mudavadi emphasized that Kenya is ready to share its rich story with the world while strengthening its position as a leading destination for film production, tourism, and international partnerships.
Beyond cultural pride and global visibility, Kenya is set to benefit economically from the production. The filming has already injected millions of shillings into the local economy, with Kenyan talent, hospitality services, transport, and logistics providers taking part in the process.
Kenya’s Film Legacy
This is not the first time Kenya has hosted a major Indian film project. In 2019, renowned Bollywood director Raj Kumar filmed Love in Mombasa in the coastal city of Mombasa, showcasing the beauty of the Kenyan coastline.
Kenya has also been a favorite destination for Hollywood filmmakers over the years. Movies such as The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and Tomb Raider featured Kenyan landscapes, proving that the country remains one of the most attractive filming destinations globally.
With Globetrotter, Kenya’s position as a world-class film hub is set to rise even higher, not only putting the country on the global entertainment map but also boosting tourism and local industries in the process.
