Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu Muthama and her family have been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of her son, Moses Nduya Muthama.
The heartbreaking news has shocked leaders, friends, and residents across Machakos County and the country at large, with many sending messages of comfort and support to the grieving family during this difficult period.
According to early reports, Moses is said to have collapsed on the evening of Wednesday, February 4, after experiencing breathing complications.
Family members and those around him reportedly rushed to seek urgent medical attention, but efforts to save his life were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital, leaving the family devastated by the unexpected loss.
Moses Nduya Muthama was the only child of Senator Agnes Kavindu Muthama and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, a seasoned politician who previously served as the chairperson of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
News of his passing quickly spread, prompting an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, colleagues, and members of the public who expressed sympathy with the family as they come to terms with the tragedy.
Kitui Senator Enock Wambua was among the leaders who publicly conveyed his condolences, expressing sorrow over the loss and assuring the family of continued prayers and support.
Many other leaders and close associates have also shared messages on social media, describing the loss as painful and urging the family to remain strong during this trying moment.
Although the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed, Moses’ body has been preserved at a mortuary in Machakos as preparations continue for a postmortem examination.
The examination is expected to provide more clarity on the circumstances surrounding his sudden death.
The loss has reopened painful memories for the Muthama family, coming nearly three years after the death of Johnson Muthama’s daughter, Janet Njoki, who passed away in April 2022.
At the time, President William Ruto, who was then serving as Deputy President, described Njoki as a hardworking, responsible, and dependable individual whose character left a strong impression on those who knew her.
Despite the public announcement of her passing, the family chose to keep details surrounding her death private. She was later laid to rest at the family home in Tala, Machakos County.
Senator Kavindu now joins a number of senior political leaders who have experienced personal loss in recent times.
Over the past year, several prominent figures in Kenya’s political scene have lost close family members, including Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi, who lost her son last year, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who also mourned the death of his brother later in the year.
