Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has strongly warned his Embakasi East colleague, Babu Owino, against abandoning the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party to join the political camp of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking on Thursday morning, Kaluma cautioned Babu that walking away from ODM to align himself with Gachagua’s newly emerging outfit — the Democracy or Citizens’ Party (DCP) — would be a grave political mistake.
He argued that such a move would not only reduce Babu’s influence in Nairobi politics but would also damage his public image at a time when he is positioning himself for higher office.
According to Kaluma, Gachagua’s faction is a divisive political movement that thrives on hostility and would eventually drag down anyone associated with it.
He stressed that by leaving ODM, Babu would be risking his political future, especially his ambition to contest for the Nairobi governorship in 2027.
“Babu Owino, leaving Baba (Raila Odinga) for Gachagua and his hateful group will be your shortest political walk to oblivion. Retrace your steps back to Raila Odinga and ODM,” Kaluma warned.
Kaluma’s remarks followed Babu Owino’s recent outcry that he has been sidelined in key ODM affairs despite his loyalty and sacrifices for the party.
During an interview on Kameme FM, the youthful legislator openly expressed his frustrations, saying he has already accepted that he is unlikely to receive ODM leader Raila Odinga’s backing for the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
He explained that Raila’s body language and recent actions clearly showed that the former Prime Minister preferred Governor Johnson Sakaja instead of him.
“I cannot be given an ODM party ticket. You saw at Bomas how Governor Sakaja was endorsed by the ODM party and by Raila Odinga himself,” Babu said during the interview.
He went further to note that even though he does not expect Raila to hand him the ticket, he still respects him as a political father and mentor.
However, he insisted that his ultimate political destiny lies in God’s hands, saying: “I cannot be given the ODM party ticket, but what I can do is respect Raila as my father. The party ticket will be given to Sakaja, but my party ticket is in the hands of God.”
At the same time, Babu Owino revisited the controversial impeachment motion against Sakaja, which collapsed in the Nairobi County Assembly. He accused President William Ruto of meddling in the process to save the governor from being ousted.
The Embakasi East MP argued that Sakaja’s leadership had failed to meet the expectations of Nairobi residents, describing it as a betrayal of the people.
He further cautioned that allowing Sakaja more time to run the county would only worsen service delivery and pile more problems on Nairobi residents.
