The Standard Group PLC has announced significant changes at the top, with three members of its Board of Directors resigning and two new appointments being made in their place.

In a public notice released on September 8, the media company explained that the shake-up is part of a broader effort to boost innovation, strengthen governance, and drive long-term strategic growth in the fast-changing media industry.

This latest development comes just three months after the abrupt resignation of the company’s Group CEO, Marion Gathoga-Mwangi, who stepped down in June 2024, barely a year after assuming leadership on July 15, 2023.

In her farewell note to employees, Gathoga-Mwangi cited personal reasons for her exit and assured staff that a smooth transition process was already underway.

As part of the new changes, the company confirmed the appointment of Laila Denise Cherobon as a Non-Executive Director and Edward Mwasi as an Independent Non-Executive Director, both taking up their roles with immediate effect.

Quoting the Capital Markets (Public Offers, Listings and Disclosures) Regulations, 2023, the board emphasized that the appointments were in line with regulatory requirements and its ongoing commitment to maintain strong corporate governance.

At the same time, the company announced the resignation of Albert Siegi, Christine Muthui, and Chris Otundo from the board. In its official statement, the company expressed gratitude for their service:

“The Board and Management take this opportunity to thank Mr. Siegi, Ms. Muthui, and Mr. Otundo for their sustained and exemplary contribution to The Standard Group PLC and wish them the very best in their future endeavors.”

Who Are the New Appointees?

Denise Cherobon is no stranger to the Standard Group, where she currently serves as the Chief Strategy Officer. She also sits on the Advisory Board of the International News Media Association (INMA), a global industry body.

The board praised her for her visionary leadership and her role in steering the company’s innovation and growth strategies.

Denise holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Sunderland (UK), a Higher National Diploma with Distinction, and multiple professional certifications in project and strategic management.

She is currently pursuing an Executive Master’s in Public Policy Management, highlighting her continued commitment to personal and professional growth.

Edward Mwasi, on the other hand, brings over three decades of experience in media leadership, editorial strategy, and governance reform. He is currently a Media Strategy and Innovation Consultant at the Center for Business Innovation & Training (CBiT).

Mwasi’s career highlights include serving as CEO of the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board and working as Chief Graphic Designer at the Nation Media Group.

Beyond editorial work, he has been deeply involved in strengthening governance structures across Kenya, particularly by training board secretariats and commissions on how to integrate technology into governance for better efficiency, decision-making, and service delivery.

The board described Mwasi as a veteran who has consistently championed innovation, transformation, and media excellence throughout his career.
