Kenya Met Department Warns of Rain, Winds, and Chilly Weather in Several Regions
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a new weather update, cautioning Kenyans in different parts of the country to prepare for more rainfall, cold conditions, and strong winds in the coming five days.
In its weekly forecast, the department highlighted that Nairobi, Kiambu, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, Naivasha, and Mombasa will continue to experience rainfall between Tuesday, September 16, and Saturday, September 20.
Residents in these regions have been advised to remain alert as showers will be accompanied by chilly mornings and cloudy evenings.
Apart from rainfall, the department also warned of strong southerly to south-easterly winds that will exceed 25 knots.
These strong winds are expected across the Coast and other towns such as Machakos, Kitui, and Lodwar, which could disrupt normal activities in some areas, especially for farmers and small-scale traders who rely on calm weather.
According to the weatherman, most parts of the country will remain largely sunny and dry. However, rainfall will be experienced in sections of the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and coastal areas.
Highlands East of the Rift Valley
Counties including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi are expected to start the mornings with sunny conditions throughout the week.
Showers are expected in a few areas during the afternoons up to Thursday, while Friday and Saturday will be dominated by sunny afternoons.
At night, cloudy conditions are expected to persist across the week.
The maximum temperatures in these counties will rise to around 26°C, while minimum temperatures could fall as low as 7°C, making mornings and nights noticeably chilly.
Western Kenya and Rift Valley
Counties such as Kisumu, Kisii, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot are forecast to receive regular rainfall both during the day and night until Saturday.
These areas will remain wet throughout the week, with temperatures expected to peak at 27°C during the day and drop to about 10°C at night.
Coastal Counties
In Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as Tana River County, sunny intervals will dominate during the day. However, residents should expect cloudy conditions at night.
The coastal belt will remain fairly warm, with maximum daytime temperatures of 30°C and minimum nighttime temperatures of around 20°C.
Eastern and Southeastern Kenya
Counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with the inland parts of Tana River County, will remain hot and sunny throughout the day across the week.
Cloudy skies are expected at night, but no significant rainfall has been predicted in these regions. Daytime temperatures will rise to around 31°C, while nighttime lows will drop to about 11°C.
Northern Counties
Turkana and Samburu will experience showers and thunderstorms both during the day and night up to Saturday. These conditions could affect movement in some areas and increase flood risks in low-lying regions. Residents will see maximum daytime temperatures of 32°C, while nighttime temperatures will dip to 11°C.
North Eastern Kenya
Counties such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are expected to remain hot and dry with consistent sunshine during the day.
Nights, however, will be cloudy. Daytime temperatures in these counties will rise to as high as 36°C, while minimum nighttime temperatures will fall to around 14°C.
The weather agency has urged Kenyans to take the forecast seriously, prepare accordingly, and stay updated on changes as the week progresses.
