KETRACO Appoints Kipkemoi Kibias as Acting CEO
Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has announced the appointment of Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as its new Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective Friday, September 19, 2025.
The announcement was made in an official communication by the KETRACO Board Chair, Mr. Mohamed Abdi, who revealed that the decision came after wide consultations with key government offices, including the Head of Public Service and the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum.
“The Board of Directors, after consulting with the Chief of Staff & Head of Public Service and the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Energy & Petroleum, wishes to inform the general public that Eng.
Kipkemoi Kibias has been appointed as the Acting Managing Director and CEO of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO), effective September 19, 2025,” read part of the board’s statement.
Transition in Leadership
Kibias takes over from Eng. John Mativo, who had been serving as KETRACO’s CEO since April 2023. This transition marks another significant step for the state corporation, which plays a key role in developing, operating, and maintaining Kenya’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
Professional Journey
Before his appointment, Kibias was serving as KETRACO’s General Manager for System Operation and Power Management.
In this role, he was responsible for ensuring the smooth running, reliability, and efficiency of Kenya’s national electricity transmission system.
Prior to joining KETRACO, he worked at the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), where he held several senior positions.
His experience at KPLC covered a wide range of responsibilities, including serving as a Regional Manager, and working in areas such as power system design and construction, operations, maintenance, and long-term system planning.
The board described him as “passionate about power systems and renewable energy,” a statement that highlights both his dedication and his contribution to the energy sector over the years.
Expertise and Professional Memberships
Kibias is a registered professional engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya and also a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK). Beyond his national roles, he has also made contributions at the continental level. He currently serves as a committee member of the Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO) Nuclear Committee, where he helps shape discussions and policies around nuclear energy development in Africa.
His technical expertise is wide-ranging, covering areas such as system design, construction of transmission infrastructure, maintenance, system planning, and renewable energy integration.
Academic Achievements
Kibias has an impressive academic background. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
He later pursued a Master of Business Administration in Strategic Management at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, where he gained strong leadership and management skills.
In addition, he holds a Master’s degree in Nuclear Power Plant Engineering from KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School in Ulsan, South Korea — a unique qualification that positions him as one of the few Kenyan engineers with specialized training in nuclear energy.
Currently, he is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Energy Studies at Moi University, further strengthening his academic and research expertise in the energy sector.
Looking Ahead
With his extensive experience in energy management, engineering, and leadership, Kibias is expected to steer KETRACO into its next growth phase.
His appointment comes at a time when Kenya is working to expand its electricity transmission infrastructure, enhance reliability, and embrace renewable energy sources to support economic growth and sustainability.
Industry observers note that his leadership will be critical in guiding KETRACO to achieve its strategic goals, particularly in expanding the national grid, improving power reliability, and ensuring Kenya continues to make progress toward energy security and clean energy adoption.
