Residents Protest Outside Raila Odinga’s Karen Home Over Land Dispute

Tension rose on Friday morning after a group of residents from Ngong in Kajiado County gathered outside the Karen home of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The locals were demanding his intervention in what they described as a major land-grabbing scandal involving thousands of acres.

According to the protesters, more than 2,000 acres of prime land located in Kibiku, Ngong, have allegedly been taken over by powerful individuals in government. They claimed the land, estimated to be worth around Ksh2 billion, was grabbed with the help of officials from the Ministry of Lands.

While staging their protest outside Raila’s gate, the residents voiced anger towards Lands Principal Secretary Nixon Korir and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei. They accused the two of ignoring their complaints and failing to address the dispute. The group went as far as demanding PS Korir’s resignation over the allegations.

Images and videos shared by Kenyans.co.ke showed the demonstrators holding placards and branches as they chanted their demands. Some of the messages written on the placards read “Korir Must Go!”, “Baba help us,” and “Justice for the Maasai Community,” signalling their call for support from Raila and the broader public.

The protesters also pointed fingers at Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia, alleging that he played a role in facilitating the illegal takeover. They insisted that the land in question belongs to them through ancestral inheritance and should not be interfered with.

By the time this report was being prepared, Raila Odinga had not yet spoken to the group or issued any public response regarding the matter.

This protest comes just two days after Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku publicly assured the affected communities that their land rights would be protected.

Speaking to locals on Wednesday, September 24, the governor urged them to remain calm, emphasizing that the land case is still undergoing legal determination.

Ole Lenku reminded them that the Court of Appeal has already ordered the surrender of the disputed title deed, meaning the land is still under judicial consideration.

He questioned the source of fresh fears, given that the title deed has not been transferred and remains under the court’s control.

He further reassured the residents that despite the government being broad-based and inclusive, he does not believe it would seize land belonging to the Maasai community.

The governor encouraged them to allow the legal process to continue rather than escalate tensions.
