Kenyan-based journalist, blogger, and podcaster James Murua is appealing to both the Kenyan government and the African Union to intervene after his wife, celebrated South African author Zukiswa Wanner, was reportedly abducted by Israeli forces.
Murua says Wanner was part of a South African humanitarian delegation delivering food and medical supplies to Gaza when the incident took place.
According to his statement, she was among over 450 international activists traveling on more than 40 Global Sumud Flotilla vessels that were intercepted on Thursday, October 2.
The flotilla was attempting to take aid to Gaza by sea when the Israeli military allegedly detained everyone on board.
Murua expressed deep concern over her safety:
“In any other situation, I wouldn’t be worried about the safety of my partner, but the Israelis have shown singular cruelty to anyone who stands in the way of their mission to eradicate Palestinians from the face of the earth.”
He directly appealed to both Nairobi and the AU:
“I appeal to the government of Kenya, where she has lived for the past 14 years, and to the African Union, to do everything possible to get her and the others who have been kidnapped by the Israeli regime released.”
What Is the Global Sumud Flotilla?
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is an international initiative where volunteers and activists board vessels to deliver humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza and to challenge Israel’s naval blockade. Participants come from many countries and include doctors, writers, campaigners, and human rights defenders.
Reports say Wanner and others were detained at sea and transported to Israel. A video circulated afterward – apparently recorded before her capture – shows Wanner asking for help.
“My name is Zukiswa Wanner. I am a South African citizen. If you are watching this, it means that I have been kidnapped by the Israeli Occupying Forces and taken to Israel. Please tell the South African government to get me released.”
The flotilla was intercepted roughly 70 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, an area considered international waters. This has sparked legal and ethical questions about the legitimacy of the Israeli operation under international law.
Israel has not released an official statement on the detention, despite public concern from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has demanded the release of all abducted citizens.
Who Is Zukiswa Wanner?
Zukiswa Wanner, born in Lusaka, Zambia in 1976 to a South African mother and Zimbabwean father, is an award-winning novelist and cultural activist. She is best known for titles such as:
- The Madams (2006)
- Behind Every Successful Man (2008)
- Men of the South (2010)
- London Cape Town Joburg (2014)
Beyond fiction, she has been active in publishing, human rights advocacy, and pan-African arts movements. In 2024, she famously returned the Goethe Medal in protest of what she viewed as Germany’s silence or complicity in the Gaza war.
She has also openly compared the treatment of Palestinians to apartheid-era South Africa, pointing to checkpoints, displacement, and movement restrictions.
In 2024, she received the Secularist of the Year Award from the South African Secular Society for her activism in gender justice, social rights, and secular values.
The Broader Gaza–Israel Conflict
The tensions between Israel and Palestine have been ongoing for decades, rooted in disputes over land, borders, and governance in places like Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem.
In October 2023, Hamas fighters launched a deadly attack on southern Israel, killing more than 1,200 people and taking hostages. Israel responded with large-scale bombardments and a ground invasion of Gaza, citing national security.
The war has led to:
- Tens of thousands of civilian deaths
- Widespread destruction of homes, hospitals, and public infrastructure
- Mass displacement of entire communities
- Critical shortages of food, water, medicine, and shelter
Wanner’s capture adds to broader international concerns about humanitarian access, freedom of movement, and the safety of aid workers in conflict zones.
