Well-known matatu operator Super Metro is preparing to venture into the taxi business as it seeks to take advantage of the growing demand for ride-hailing services in Kenya.
In a statement posted on social media on Monday, October 13, the company revealed that it will soon introduce a new digital taxi service named SuperGo Taxi.
“SuperGo Taxi Coming Soon!!!” the Sacco announced on its official Facebook page, accompanied by a promotional banner showcasing the intended taxi design. The teaser also carried the slogan: “When the ride’s on time, the mood stays prime. We move joyfully.”
Although Super Metro did not reveal the exact rollout date, the news sparked excitement among its loyal commuters who are already familiar with the brand’s reliability and orderliness.
Super Metro currently operates more than 500 matatus and buses, transporting an estimated 170,000 passengers into and out of Nairobi every day. With such a strong customer base and positive public image, the company plans to leverage its popularity to break into the ride-hailing space.
The move comes at a time when international taxi apps are facing increasing tension with their drivers over pricing models, even as the local market continues to grow rapidly.
A study conducted in 2019 showed that 86% of Nairobi residents own a smartphone, and 58% had already used taxi-hailing apps. This widespread access has fueled a surge in new entrants seeking to offer cheaper, safer, and more convenient transport options.
Super Metro’s entry makes it the first major matatu Sacco in Kenya to expand into the digital taxi industry, setting a new precedent in the transport sector.
Beyond its matatu business operating from 18 different stages across Nairobi, Super Metro has already diversified into other services such as courier and parcel delivery, charter transportation, and even running an insurance agency.
The company currently operates stages in locations including the Nairobi CBD, Westlands, Juja, Roysambu, Kikuyu, Mlang’ano, Bus Station, Kahawa West, Kinoo, Kitengela, Ngong, Kabiria, Malaa, Juja Farm, Makongeni, Mfangano, Thika, and Regen.
In addition to local routes, Super Metro also runs the Super Metro Executive Coach, a long-distance service covering the Nairobi–Kampala route.
With the upcoming launch of SuperGo Taxi, the company is positioning itself to compete not only with established international brands like Uber, Bolt, and Little Cab, but also with newer local startups targeting Kenya’s expanding ride-hailing economy.
