KDF Starts Building New Welfare Mall at Moi Barracks in Eldoret

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has officially begun constructing a new Defence Forces Welfare Services (DEFWES) Mall at Moi Barracks in Eldoret. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 14, and was led by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri.

According to KDF, the upcoming mall will include supermarkets, restaurants, and fuel stations. These facilities are meant to provide affordable products and services to military personnel, veterans, and their families living in and around the Eldoret area.

In a statement released on Monday, KDF described the project as a major milestone in improving the quality of life and welfare of its members.

“The project marks a major stride in the Kenya Defence Forces’ commitment to improving the welfare and quality of life of its personnel, veterans, and their families within the Eldoret region,” the statement said.

KDF also emphasized that the groundbreaking represents a shared effort by top military leadership to strengthen welfare and operational infrastructure for soldiers across the country. They believe the mall will play a significant role in supporting the social, economic, and cultural needs of service members and their dependents.

Ceremony Ahead of KDF Day Celebrations

General Kahariri conducted the groundbreaking just hours before President William Ruto joined troops to mark KDF Day.

For the first time since assuming office three years ago, the President wore a complete military uniform bearing his name and the initials designating him as Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces.

KDF Day, which was established in 2011, is held annually to honour the courage, sacrifices, and service of the men and women who protect the country from internal and external threats.

Recruitment Exercise Underway

The celebrations also closely followed the launch of the latest KDF recruitment drive. Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya flagged off the exercise, which aims to boost the capacity and manpower of the armed forces.

The recruitment, which will run until October 25, targets General Service Officer (GSO) cadets—both regular and graduate—Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen and Tradeswomen, and Defence Forces Constables.

CS Tuya also assured the public that the government has renewed efforts to fight corruption in the recruitment process. She warned against individuals demanding bribes or manipulating candidates to secure slots.

“We are flagging off this exercise with a clear message: the Kenya Defence Forces recruitment is free, fair, and open to all eligible Kenyans. Any form of bribery or canvassing will be met with apprehension and prosecution,” she declared.

She further urged recruits to approach the process confidently and uphold KDF standards.

“Let this be a moment of pride, not fear. The KDF stands for discipline, dignity, and duty, and every recruit must reflect those values,” she added.
