ODM Leaders Affirm Support for President Ruto in 2027 Following Raila Odinga’s Death
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has publicly declared that it will stand behind President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, following the passing of its longtime leader, Raila Odinga.
During a meeting attended by key ODM leaders, members resolved that the party would continue being part of the broad-based government formed through an agreement between Raila and Ruto.
They emphasized that ODM’s cooperation with the current administration would not waver despite the uncertainty that arose after Raila’s death.
Acting party leader and Raila’s elder brother, Dr. Oburu Odinga, confirmed the party’s position, saying ODM’s support for Ruto remains strong and unshaken.
Speaking at his Bondo home after meeting delegates from Luo Nyanza, Oburu explained that the decision was guided by a commitment to maintain national unity and promote peace across Kenya.
He urged party members to stay away from divisive politics and assured them that he would work to preserve Raila’s legacy and strengthen ODM as it marks its 20th anniversary.
Oburu further noted that the late Raila had personally directed ODM to stand with President Ruto as part of his broader vision for a stable and united nation.
According to him, supporting Ruto in the upcoming 2027 elections was one of Raila’s final instructions before his untimely death in India on Wednesday, October 15.
The statement from Oburu comes amid growing speculation of internal divisions within ODM following Raila’s passing. Some members reportedly questioned whether the party should continue supporting the government or field its own presidential candidate.
However, Oburu insisted that ODM’s position within the coalition remains secure and that the late Raila’s wishes will be honored.
Party insiders also expressed concern about a possible Cabinet reshuffle that could bring in KANU leader Gideon Moi, potentially affecting ODM’s influence in government.
The expected changes have reportedly caused unease, especially among officials and advisors associated with ODM who were seconded to Ruto’s government in 2024.
While there are reports that some of these individuals might lose their positions, President Ruto has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
Despite these challenges, the meeting in Bondo ended with a unanimous resolution from ODM delegates representing Luo Nyanza. They agreed to endorse Dr. Oburu Odinga as the official party leader, pending ratification by ODM’s top decision-making organs.
The leaders described the move as a step toward stability and continuity, assuring members that the party remains united even after the loss of its founding figure.
They pledged to uphold Raila’s vision for a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous Kenya while strengthening ODM’s partnership with the current administration.
