Hope for 2027 AFCON as Kenya Makes Last-Minute Payments

Hope Rises for 2027 AFCON as Kenya Clears Last-Minute Hosting Payment

Kenyans now have fresh hope for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after President William Ruto’s administration made a crucial last-minute payment of Ksh3.9 billion to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The payment has come as a huge relief across the country, calming growing fears that Kenya could risk losing its right to co-host the prestigious continental tournament because of delays in meeting the required financial obligations.

The major payment now secures Kenya’s position in the 2027 AFCON hosting plans and sends a strong message about the country’s seriousness in delivering one of Africa’s biggest sporting events.

For weeks, concerns had been mounting among football fans and stakeholders over whether the country would beat the deadline, making Tuesday’s announcement a welcome development.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, March 31, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed that the government had successfully sent the required hosting fee to CAF.

He explained that this important move means Kenya has now fulfilled one of the most critical financial commitments needed to remain on course for the 2027 tournament.

“I am pleased to announce that the Government of Kenya has fully met its financial and institutional obligations to CAF as we steadily advance towards co-hosting the 2027 AFCON,” Mvurya said.

He further noted that the government had remitted the full $30 million hosting fee, a move that not only protects Kenya’s hosting rights but also strengthens the country’s image as a reliable and prepared partner in continental football matters.

According to the CS, the payment is more than just a financial transaction. It is a clear sign of Kenya’s credibility, readiness, and firm determination to stage a successful tournament together with its East African neighbours.

The government believes this commitment will boost confidence among CAF officials and other partners involved in the preparations.

Mvurya also revealed that the government has reorganised the Local Organising Committee to make preparations more effective.

The new structure now brings together important players from both the public and private sectors, a strategy aimed at improving coordination, speeding up decision-making, and ensuring every area of the tournament planning is handled professionally.

He explained that this broad, multi-sectoral approach was intentional because hosting AFCON requires strong institutional support, detailed planning, and quick execution of projects.

By bringing different sectors on board, the government wants to ensure the country’s capacity matches the size, complexity, and urgency of preparations needed for a tournament of such international importance.

At the same time, the Ministry of Sports said it is ready to fast-track major infrastructure and operational projects following recent inspection reports by CAF officials.

These assessments highlighted areas that need urgent attention if Kenya is to meet global standards before the competition kicks off in 2027.

Among the key areas set for urgent action are the construction and renovation of match stadiums, improvement of training grounds, upgrading transport and logistics systems, and strengthening safety and security arrangements.

Broadcast facilities will also be enhanced to ensure the tournament can be aired smoothly to millions of viewers across Africa and the world.

Mvurya assured the public that the government is treating every recommendation from CAF with the seriousness it deserves.

He described the process as routine but extremely important in the hosting cycle, adding that Kenya is responding to each issue with precision, speed, and accountability to avoid any setbacks.

In another important step, the CS disclosed that officials from the three co-hosting nations — Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania — are expected to meet next month.

The meeting will focus on building a harmonised framework that will guide joint preparations and improve coordination among the three East African countries.

One of the main areas to be discussed will be visa facilitation mechanisms to make travel easier for participating teams, match officials, media crews, and fans.

The aim is to ensure smooth movement across borders during the tournament period, allowing the three nations to operate as one seamless hosting region.

This latest payment and renewed government commitment have now given football lovers across Kenya renewed confidence that the dream of hosting AFCON 2027 remains alive and achievable.

With finances now secured and preparations expected to move faster, the focus shifts to infrastructure delivery and regional cooperation as the countdown to the historic tournament continues.
