Government to Burn Ksh8 Billion Worth of Meth Seized in Mombasa Publicly

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the government will destroy the huge consignment of methamphetamine worth Ksh8 billion that was recently seized during a major multi-agency operation in the Indian Ocean.

Speaking during a church service in Kisumu County on Sunday, October 26, Murkomen reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to eliminating illegal drugs and blocking their entry into the country, especially from foreign sources.

He emphasized that the administration would not tolerate any activities that threaten the health and safety of Kenyans.

Murkomen explained that the consignment, which weighed about 1,024 kilograms, would be publicly burned to send a clear message about the government’s seriousness in the war against narcotics.

“As you saw yesterday, our multi-agency team intercepted substances that were being transported by Iranians in our territorial waters,” he said.

“The suspects will face the law, and soon, you will witness us destroying those illicit substances because our government has decided to stand firm against all forms of vices that continue to harm our citizens.”

In an official statement released later, the Interior CS confirmed that six Iranian nationals had been arrested and were being held in police custody pending investigations.

Preliminary forensic tests revealed that the seized substance was methamphetamine, with a remarkable purity level of 98 per cent.

Authorities estimated its street value to be around Ksh8 billion, making it one of the largest drug seizures ever recorded in Kenya’s history.

Security officials revealed that the interception was made possible through cooperation between local and international security agencies.

The boat carrying the drugs had raised suspicion among regional and foreign intelligence partners, who promptly alerted Kenyan authorities.

Acting on the tip-off, Kenyan security teams placed the vessel under close surveillance in the Western Indian Ocean before eventually impounding it.

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin confirmed that investigators obtained a court order to search the vessel after it was seized.

Upon inspection, officers discovered the massive quantity of narcotics concealed within the ship.

The success of the operation was attributed to strong coordination among different agencies and partners involved in maritime security.

Following the high-profile bust, CS Murkomen stated that the government was reinforcing its maritime surveillance systems and tightening inter-agency collaboration to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He further assured Kenyans that the administration would continue partnering with global security bodies to dismantle wider international drug networks that use the Indian Ocean route to traffic narcotics into the country.

Murkomen reiterated that the destruction of the Ksh8 billion methamphetamine haul would be done publicly, symbolizing transparency and the government’s determination to protect the nation from drug-related harm.

He called on citizens to support the ongoing anti-drug campaign by reporting suspicious activities and helping authorities safeguard communities from the devastating effects of narcotics.

This operation marks one of Kenya’s most significant victories in the ongoing war against illegal drugs, underscoring the country’s renewed focus on strengthening border security, intelligence sharing, and regional cooperation to combat transnational crime.
