A deep sense of grief has hit a family in Sokoke, Kilifi County, following the untimely death of their 19-year-old daughter, Elizabeth Rukia Jumaa, just days before she was to sit for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
Rukia, a Form Four student at Bale Secondary School, had been eagerly preparing for the national examinations, which were scheduled to begin in early November. Her sudden passing has left her family, schoolmates, and the entire community in shock and disbelief.
Sudden Death That Shocked Many
According to reports, Elizabeth collapsed at home one evening after complaining of a severe headache.
Family members say she had not shown any signs of illness prior to that night. Despite their attempts to help her, she unfortunately passed away, leaving everyone devastated.
Her body was taken to a mortuary in Kilifi as her relatives began funeral arrangements. The young student was laid to rest on October 25 in her home village in Sokoke, where classmates, teachers, and villagers gathered to mourn her loss.
Many described her as a bright, determined, and humble girl whose dream of completing school and building a better future was tragically cut short.
“I had already started wishing you success in your exams, but now we are all forced to say rest in peace,” one relative shared sorrowfully.
Friends and Netizens Mourn
News of Elizabeth’s passing spread quickly on social media, triggering an outpouring of grief and emotional tributes. Many Kenyans expressed sympathy for her family and lamented the pain of losing such a young life so close to achieving her goal.
- Sabina John wrote: “Pole sana, Mungu awape nguvu katika kipindi hiki. Wanao maliza watoto wadogo kuzuia ndoto zao, chuma chao ki motoni.”
- Tracy Ivan commented: “This is so painful. It reminds me of my brother who could’ve been in Form 4 this year. Death is cruel. Rest in peace Rukia, and my brother too.”

Other Similar Tragedies in Kilifi
This is not the first time Kilifi County has been struck by the tragic loss of a young student. Earlier, another heartbreaking incident involved Anestine Dzidza Tunje, a Grade Eight pupil who died a week after allegedly being punished by her teacher.
Reports revealed that the teacher had struck her on the head, and she later complained of severe headaches. A post-mortem report confirmed that she died from internal bleeding caused by blunt force trauma.
Tragic Loss at the University of Nairobi
In a separate tragedy, a University of Nairobi first-year student, Nicole Jemutai, also lost her life after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the Thika Superhighway.
Her sudden death shocked her friends and family, and messages of condolence flooded social media as Kenyans joined in mourning the young scholar.
A Community in Mourning
The people of Kilifi continue to grapple with the loss of Elizabeth Rukia, describing her death as a huge blow to her family and the school community.
Many have called for more awareness on student health and wellbeing, especially during the stressful exam period when pressure tends to weigh heavily on learners.
As Rukia’s classmates prepare to sit for their KCSE exams, they do so with heavy hearts, remembering a friend whose journey ended too soon.
Her memory now stands as a reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of supporting one another through moments of grief and loss.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
