Why Ruto is Jetting Out to Qatar

Why President Ruto is Travelling to Qatar

President William Ruto is set to leave Kenya tonight for Doha, Qatar, where he will take part in the United Nations Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2).

The high-profile event brings together global leaders to discuss key social and economic issues affecting the world.

In a statement released on Monday, November 3, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed confirmed that the President will be attending the summit and will also hold several important meetings while in the Gulf nation. However, Mohammed did not disclose when the Head of State is expected to return to Kenya.

At the summit, President Ruto will deliver key addresses representing both Kenya and the African group.

His speeches are expected to focus on issues such as fair and inclusive global financial systems, universal access to essential services like health and education, the need for stronger international cooperation, and increased African representation in global organisations.

“President William Ruto departs this evening for Doha, Qatar, to strengthen economic partnerships, attract investment opportunities, and participate in the UN Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2).

The summit will focus on important themes such as poverty reduction, decent employment opportunities, and social inclusion,” Hussein Mohammed said.

“At the meeting, the President will speak on behalf of Kenya and the African continent, calling for fair global financial systems, equal access to essential services, stronger multilateral partnerships, and reforms that ensure African nations have a bigger voice in global decision-making processes,” he added.

While in Qatar, President Ruto will also hold high-level talks with several world leaders, including Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar.

Their discussions are expected to focus on deepening diplomatic and economic ties between Kenya and Qatar, with special emphasis on trade, investment, and other strategic areas of cooperation.

The President will also advocate for the expansion of the Kenya-Qatar Bilateral Labour Agreement, which aims to open more job opportunities for Kenyan youth in the Gulf region.

According to Mohammed, the government plans to ensure that more Kenyan professionals and skilled workers can secure employment in Qatar under fair and improved conditions.

“President Ruto will push for the expansion of the Kenya-Qatari Bilateral Labour Agreement to cover more professional and technical fields, while also enhancing training programs that align with Qatar’s labour market needs,” Mohammed explained.

“This will create more employment pathways for young Kenyans and strengthen the role of the Kenyan diaspora already working in Qatar in supporting both economies.”

In addition to diplomatic engagements, Ruto is expected to meet Qatari investors and business leaders to discuss potential partnerships in key sectors such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, healthcare, tourism, transport, and logistics.

The discussions are part of Kenya’s broader efforts to attract foreign investment and promote sustainable economic growth.

This latest trip follows another international visit nearly two months ago when President Ruto attended the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) held in Yokohama, Japan.

That trip also focused on strengthening partnerships and securing development deals beneficial to Kenya and the African region.

President Ruto’s trip to Qatar underscores his continued efforts to position Kenya as a strong partner in global affairs, while also creating more economic and employment opportunities for citizens back home.
