Ruto Warns Youths Against Misusing NYOTA Fund on Romance and Alcohol

President William Ruto has cautioned young Kenyans against wasting money received from the NYOTA Fund on irresponsible activities such as drinking alcohol and romantic relationships.

Speaking at the Mumias Sports Complex in Kakamega County on Friday, November 7, 2025, during the official launch of the NYOTA Fund, President Ruto reminded the youth that the initiative was created to empower them economically, not to promote reckless behavior.

The program aims to support self-employment, innovation, and entrepreneurship among Kenya’s young people.

Ruto made it clear that his administration will not tolerate the misuse of funds meant to uplift lives and create opportunities.

He emphasized that the NYOTA Fund should only be used for productive purposes such as starting or expanding businesses, learning new skills, or developing innovative ideas that can generate income.

“I don’t want to hear that someone used their NYOTA Fund money to sponsor a romantic affair or buy alcohol,” the President warned. “This money is meant to change your life and build your future.

The government took this loan from the World Bank, and it must be repaid. That is why I’m asking you to use it wisely — tumieni hiyo pesa vizuri,” Ruto added.

He thanked the World Bank Group for partnering with Kenya to make the NYOTA Fund a reality, saying that the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to empowering the youth and creating a generation of job creators rather than job seekers.

Promoting Transparency Through Technology

President Ruto also underlined the importance of using technology to enhance transparency and fairness in the country’s systems. He said technology helps eliminate favoritism and corruption by giving every Kenyan an equal chance to access opportunities without relying on personal connections.

“Technology is a great equalizer. It ensures everyone has a fair shot at success. We don’t want a Kenya where you must know someone to get something. With technology, we can fight corruption, cut out brokers, and ensure resources reach those who truly deserve them,” Ruto explained.

To further support digital inclusion, Ruto announced that he has directed all Members of Parliament to set up at least one ICT hub in every ward.

These hubs, he said, will allow young people to access digital jobs, explore e-commerce, and participate in Kenya’s growing online economy.

“I have instructed every MP to ensure each ward has an ICT hub where young people can learn digital skills, find online work, and use technology to grow their businesses.

Through these centers, our youth will help drive the digital economy and contribute meaningfully to national growth,” he stated.

Encouraging Responsible Use of Funds

Ruto concluded his address by urging young people to take the NYOTA Fund seriously and use it responsibly to create meaningful change in their lives and communities.

He reminded them that the country’s future lies in their hands and that their choices today will determine Kenya’s tomorrow.

“The future of this nation depends on responsible and visionary young people. Use these funds to build something that benefits not only you but also others around you. Create jobs, start innovations, and become the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.

The NYOTA Fund, which was launched as part of the government’s youth empowerment program, aims to provide financial support to young entrepreneurs and innovators across Kenya.

It focuses on helping them start or expand businesses, acquire new skills, and contribute to Kenya’s economic transformation.

President Ruto’s firm message served as both a warning and a call to action — urging the youth to embrace responsibility, integrity, and hard work as the foundation for a prosperous future.
