Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) politician Edgar Busiega is mourning the death of his father, a tragedy that struck only days after he pulled out of the Malava Constituency by-election.
Busiega shared the painful news on Sunday, November 16, through a heartfelt statement on his social media pages.
He confirmed that his father passed away at around 9 a.m., describing the moment as one of the most devastating experiences of his life.
“It is with immense pain that I share this heartbreaking news: We lost Dad this morning at 9:30am,” he wrote, expressing deep sorrow.
Although he did not disclose the cause of his father’s death, Busiega praised him as a strong guiding force in his life.
He explained that losing him felt like losing more than a parent.
He added that his father was a friend, a confidant, and someone whose guidance always grounded him, noting that the weight of the loss had left him emotionally crushed.
As of the time this report was published, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s party had not released an official statement regarding the tragedy.
The loss comes at a difficult time for Busiega, following the announcement that he would not contest in the Malava by-election. The United Opposition resolved to rally behind DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako, a move aimed at strengthening their chances by presenting a single candidate.
On Thursday, October 30, the DAP-K Party confirmed that Busiega voluntarily stepped down to support Panyako. Shortly after, Panyako publicly appreciated the unity shown by the opposition and thanked DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua and his deputy Cleophas Malala for backing his candidacy.
“Firstly, I want to thank the DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, and his deputy Cleophas Malala, for helping me and allowing my brother to support me in this journey,” Panyako said in his statement.
Busiega, despite stepping aside, will still play a major role in the opposition. He disclosed that he would take charge of DCP’s legal affairs throughout the by-election period. Malala also encouraged his decision by promising him a direct DCP ticket for the 2027 parliamentary elections, ensuring that his political future remains secure.
Signs had already emerged that Panyako would carry the opposition flag, especially after he sailed through the nomination process unchallenged and received a direct ticket.
The Malava parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of Moses Malulu Injendi, who passed away on February 17 following weeks of treatment in hospital.
Several candidates have since lined up for the by-election, including UDA’s David Ndakwa, who is expected to be Panyako’s strongest opponent as the race intensifies.
