Kisumu Mourners Stranded After Deceased Man’s Body Reportedly “Refused” to Go Home

A funeral journey that was expected to be calm and respectful turned into a strange and dramatic experience after the hearse carrying a deceased man stalled several times on the road.

The unusual chain of events left mourners confused, tired, and filled with fear as many struggled to understand what was happening.

According to an undated video shared by Jaramogi Allan Ofula, the incident did not occur just once — the vehicle kept stopping repeatedly, raising concerns of spiritual interference, unresolved family issues, or a hidden conflict connected to the deceased.

Hearse Repeatedly Stalls Midway

Mourners who had left Nairobi at around 4am hoped for a smooth trip and expected to reach home early. However, by 3pm, the convoy had barely reached Awasi. The bus transporting the body reportedly stalled multiple times, leaving everyone inside frightened and deeply unsettled.

At one point, the coffin was even removed from the vehicle and placed on the grass “to catch some sun and fresh air,” as mourners believed this might help calm whatever unseen force was resisting the journey. Despite this attempt, the challenges continued, and the coffin was eventually placed back into the vehicle — only for the hearse to stall again.

Attempts to Restore Order

As panic grew, church elders and respected community members stepped forward to try and resolve the situation spiritually. They prayed over the casket, spoke powerful words, and tried to reassure the deceased, asking him to allow the convoy to continue safely.

Some mourners even turned the coffin in different directions, jokingly trying to “trick” the spirit into believing they were returning to Nairobi, hoping it would ease the tension. Unfortunately, none of these efforts worked, and the vehicle continued to resist every attempt to move forward.

What happens when bodies “reject” home?

In many communities, unexplained disruptions during funeral travel are often associated with unsettled family matters, land disputes, or disagreements involving the deceased.

There is also a belief that if someone suspected to have contributed to the person’s death is inside the vehicle, the deceased may “reject” the journey until the truth is revealed.

Traditionally, when a body is believed to be resisting the journey home, a ritual is performed: all passengers must step out of the vehicle, then re-enter one by one as the driver tests the engine.

The person whose entry causes the vehicle to stall is usually identified as the source of spiritual conflict and is not allowed to continue to the burial site.

Growing Tension Among Mourners

With hours of delay, heat, fatigue, and fear weighing heavily on everyone, the mood in the convoy became increasingly tense. Many mourners were physically and emotionally drained, struggling to make sense of the bizarre situation.

The atmosphere was filled with a mix of cultural belief, spiritual worry, and sheer frustration. As the group debated the next steps — including performing the traditional ritual — they remained deeply unsettled by the strange resistance that had turned a solemn journey into an unforgettable ordeal.
