UDA Governor Faces New Impeachment Push
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo is once again staring at the possibility of being removed from office after a fresh impeachment motion was formally presented to the County Assembly on Monday.
The latest development has intensified political tension in the county, highlighting the deepening divisions among Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
The motion was introduced by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, who has accused Governor Nyaribo of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and making unlawful or irregular appointments. According to Matwere, the governor has violated the Constitution and other key laws governing public service and leadership.
While issuing the notice of motion, Matwere said he was seeking the governor’s removal on two major grounds:
- Gross violation of the Constitution of Kenya and other written laws, and
- Abuse of office.
This new motion deepens the political storm around Governor Nyaribo, marking the third time he has faced impeachment attempts during a special sitting of the county assembly.
Each of the previous attempts came close to unseating him, revealing how sharply split the county assembly has become.
In September last year, Governor Nyaribo narrowly survived an impeachment vote by a single margin. Out of the 34 MCAs present, 22 voted to remove him, while 12 opposed the motion, with no abstentions. The attempt failed because it did not reach the constitutional threshold required.
The year before, in September 2023, Nyaribo managed to hold onto his seat after 18 MCAs rejected that earlier impeachment effort. During that vote, 16 members supported his removal, but the number still fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to impeach a sitting governor.
As the political pressure intensifies, Governor Nyaribo is also battling legal troubles. He is currently under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over serious allegations of corruption and abuse of office. These investigations have placed the county’s top leadership under heavy scrutiny.
Just last month, the EACC carried out dramatic early-morning raids at the governor’s homes and offices over claims that he was involved in an irregular Ksh382 million tender scandal. Senior county officials believed to be part of the alleged scheme were also targeted in the same operation.
The coordinated searches were conducted across Nyamira, Kisii, and Nairobi counties, focusing on individuals the EACC has marked as persons of interest in the ongoing probe.
Amid the unfolding political and legal issues, the County Assembly Speaker announced that the House would adjourn until Tuesday, November 18, at 9:30am.
On that day, members are expected to reconvene and formally debate the impeachment motion, a session that is likely to draw widespread public attention.
The coming days will be crucial for Governor Nyaribo as he fights to defend his seat once again while navigating both political hostility and deepening corruption investigations.
