Governors Appoint Mutahi Kahiga’s Replacement in the Council of Governors (CoG)
Tharaka Nithi Governor Onesmus Muthomi Njuki has officially been named the new Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG).
His appointment comes shortly after Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga stepped down from the role on October 22, following public outrage over his insensitive comments regarding the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Before his latest elevation, Njuki had been serving as the CoG Chief Whip since October 6 — a position ranked just below the Vice Chair.
Over the years, he has held several leadership roles within the council, including previously chairing the influential CoG Health Committee, where he played a key role in national health discussions.
A source who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke confirmed that Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi has now been appointed as the new Chief Whip, effectively replacing Njuki in that capacity.
Notably, Kahiga’s resignation came only days after the major CoG leadership reshuffle on October 6, during which he had retained his Vice Chair seat. In the same reshuffle, CoG Chair Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir County also kept his position.
Njuki had been reassigned from his earlier committee roles to become the Chief Whip, taking over from Nandi Governor Stephen Sang. Sang, who had held the position for three years, was moved to chair the Resource Mobilisation and Partnerships Committee.
However, the situation changed rapidly after a controversial video emerged showing Kahiga appearing to celebrate Raila Odinga’s death.
In the recorded clip, Kahiga — speaking in Kikuyu to villagers in his home area — suggested that Raila’s passing would compel the Kenya Kwanza government to shift its priorities.
He claimed that resources previously directed to the Nyanza region would now return to Mount Kenya, remarks that sparked widespread criticism and pressure for him to step aside.
The series of events eventually led to Kahiga losing his leadership role in the Council of Governors, paving the way for Njuki’s appointment as the new Vice Chair.
