Sifuna Reaffirms His Role in ODM After President Ruto Hosts ‘Founders’ Meeting’

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has firmly stated that he remains the official Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement, despite President William Ruto going ahead with the ODM founders’ meeting that he had earlier threatened to convene back in April.

Sifuna made these remarks on November 21, 2025, during a community engagement with widows in Bomachoge Borabu Constituency, Kisii County.

Speaking at the event, he said that he had successfully “survived” what he described as political threats issued by the Head of State.

The controversial ODM founders’ dinner—hosted by President Ruto—took place on November 16, 2025, in Mombasa, as part of the celebrations marking ODM’s 20th anniversary (ODM @20).

This gathering has stirred debate within the party, especially because it followed a warning President Ruto issued months earlier.

During the burial of Raila Odinga’s bodyguard in Siaya on April 12, 2025, the President cautioned Sifuna to “be careful,” adding that he could summon the party’s founders to discipline the Nairobi Senator if necessary.

Sifuna has often appeared to challenge President Ruto’s positions, leading to speculation about disagreements between him and the State House, especially in the context of the broad-based government arrangement.

However, Sifuna has maintained that his responsibility is clear. According to the ODM constitution, the Secretary General speaks on behalf of the party and communicates its official stand on national issues.

On October 27, 2025, Sifuna read out the ODM press statement that clarified the party’s position in the broad-based government. In that statement, he confirmed that ODM would continue participating in the unity government until 2027, despite internal and external political tensions.

The Nairobi Senator was also part of the inter-party working group that developed the 10-point agenda forming the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ODM and UDA.

This MoU outlines areas of cooperation in the current political framework, making Sifuna a key player in shaping the relationship between the two parties.

By reaffirming his position, Sifuna signaled that he remains committed to his duties within ODM, regardless of pressure, criticism, or attempts to undermine his authority.
