Former Minister Joseph Munyao Dies at 85
Former Livestock Minister and long-serving Mbooni Member of Parliament, Joseph Munyao, has passed away at the age of 85.
He died on Saturday afternoon, November 22, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital. His family, friends, and leaders from across the country are mourning a man widely respected for his long career in public service.
Joseph Munyao served as Kenya’s Livestock Minister between 2003 and 2007, a period during which he made notable contributions to the agriculture and livestock sector.
Before joining the Cabinet, he had already built a strong political profile as the MP for Mbooni Constituency, a position he held from 1975 until 2007.
His more than three decades in Parliament made him one of the longest-serving legislators of his time.
He will be remembered most for his pivotal role in reviving the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) in 2006 after the institution had remained closed for 15 years.
His efforts helped restore confidence in the meat processing industry and offered new opportunities to livestock farmers across the country.
Beyond his ministerial work, Munyao also played an important role in Kenya’s political landscape. He was among the key figures involved in the establishment of the Democratic Party, which went on to influence national politics for many years.
Leaders have described him as a dedicated public servant, a strong advocate for farmers, and a committed politician whose contributions will continue to be felt for generations. His death marks the end of an era for the people of Mbooni and the country at large.
