What Is Loan-to-Value (LTV) in Crypto?

Loan-to-Value (LTV) is one of the most important numbers to understand when borrowing money using your crypto assets as collateral.

It helps you measure the size of your loan compared to the value of the crypto you have locked up. Because crypto markets move up and down very quickly, your LTV can also change at any moment, which makes it a key factor in managing your borrowing risk.

Key Takeaways

  • Loan-to-Value (LTV) shows how big your loan is compared to the value of your collateral.
  • The formula is: LTV = (Loan Value ÷ Collateral Value) × 100.
  • Crypto price swings can make your LTV go up or down very fast.
  • A higher LTV means higher risk and usually a higher interest rate.
  • A lower LTV is safer for borrowers and often comes with lower interest rates.

What Loan-to-Value (LTV) Really Means

LTV is not unique to crypto. It’s a common term in car loans, mortgages, and other secured loans. In simple words, LTV shows how much you are borrowing compared to the value of the asset backing your loan. In crypto lending, the asset is usually your Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any other accepted token.

To calculate LTV, you divide the amount you owe by the current value of your crypto collateral, then multiply by 100 to get a percentage.

How to Calculate LTV — Simple Examples

Example 1: Basic LTV Calculation

If you deposit $10,000 worth of Bitcoin as collateral and borrow $4,000, your LTV is:

($4,000 ÷ $10,000) × 100 = 40%

This means your loan is 40% of your collateral value.

Example 2: When Your Crypto Price Goes Up

If Bitcoin’s value increases and your collateral rises to $20,000, your LTV becomes:

($4,000 ÷ $20,000) × 100 = 20%

This is good for you because the loan is now a smaller percentage of your collateral.

Example 3: When Your Crypto Price Drops

If Bitcoin falls to $5,000, the LTV jumps to:

($4,000 ÷ $5,000) × 100 = 80%

This is extremely risky. Many crypto lending platforms liquidate your assets long before LTV reaches this level to protect themselves from loss.

When your LTV rises too high, you could lose your crypto even if you still owe the loan.

LTV Changes Over Time

Even if you are actively repaying your loan, LTV can still rise if the value of your collateral falls.

For example, if your loan balance decreases from $4,000 to $3,000, but your collateral drops from $10,000 to $5,000, then:

($3,000 ÷ $5,000) × 100 = 60%

This shows how sensitive LTV is to market movements.

Why LTV Matters in Crypto Borrowing

  • High LTV → High risk: You may face liquidations, and you’ll likely pay higher interest.
  • Low LTV → Low risk: You get safer loans and better interest rates.

Because crypto prices change so fast, even a safe LTV can become risky in minutes during a market crash.

Collateral Ratio vs LTV

In some DeFi platforms, you will see “collateral ratio” instead of LTV. It’s the same concept but expressed in the opposite direction.

  • 200% collateral ratio = 50% LTV
(Your collateral is double the loan amount.)

Both numbers tell the same story — how protected the lender is and how risky the loan is for you.

Interest-Only Loan vs Interest & Principal Loan — Example

Here’s a simple comparison to show how two loan types work with the same loan amount and LTV:

Type of LoanInterest-OnlyInterest & Principal
Loan Amount$5,000$5,000
LTV50%50%
Loan Term12 months12 months
Interest Rate9.95%9.95%
Monthly Payment$41.46 for 11 months + a final lump sum of $5,041.46 in month 12$439.46 per month
Total Amount Paid$5,497.52$5,273.52

What This Means

  • An interest-only loan is cheaper month-to-month, but more expensive overall because you pay a large lump sum at the end.
  • An interest + principal loan costs more each month, but the total amount paid is lower.

Final Thoughts

LTV is a moving target in crypto because both your loan balance and your collateral value can change over time.

Understanding how LTV works helps you make safer decisions, avoid liquidations, and choose the right borrowing strategy.

Whether you’re using centralized crypto lenders or DeFi platforms, monitoring your LTV is essential for protecting your assets and managing risk effectively.
