Nganya Matatu Driver Fined Ksh 70,000 After Claiming He Fled Police Due to Diarrhoea

A dramatic incident involving a nganya matatu driver in Nairobi, whose daring escape from a traffic officer went viral, has ended in court with a Ksh 70,000 fine. The driver, Donald Owuor Ndeda, told the Milimani Magistrates Court that he ran away from police because he was suffering from acute diarrhoea.

Ndeda faced six traffic-related charges linked to the November 19, 2025, incident that occurred along Valley Road. The charges highlighted reckless and dangerous behavior on the road, which caused a stir both online and among local commuters.

According to the court documents, Ndeda, who was driving an Isuzu minibus with registration number KDQ 547R, was accused of reckless driving.

Prosecutors stated that he was speeding and driving in a manner that endangered the lives of other road users. In addition, he allegedly obstructed traffic by picking up passengers at an unauthorized spot, an act that violated traffic regulations.

The court also heard that Ndeda was not wearing the required public service vehicle (PSV) uniform, contrary to Section 103A of the Traffic Act.

Furthermore, he reportedly ignored verbal commands from a traffic police officer and failed to stop when instructed, prompting the dramatic chase that was captured on video and shared widely on social media.

In addition to these charges, Ndeda faced a separate count for failing to appear in court on November 21, 2025, for a scheduled plea-taking in the same case.

In his defense, the driver explained that his sudden flight from police was caused by a severe bout of diarrhoea, which he claimed made it impossible for him to stop safely at the time.

After reviewing all the evidence and hearing Ndeda’s explanation, the court handed down a total fine of Ksh 70,000 for the multiple traffic offenses.

The ruling serves as a reminder to drivers to adhere to traffic laws and regulations, and highlights the sometimes unusual circumstances that can influence road behavior.
