Isabella Leshimpiro has made history by becoming the first female Member of County Assembly (MCA) in Samburu County, breaking a long-standing gender barrier that has existed since the start of devolution in 2013. Her election marks a significant milestone for women’s political participation in the region.
Isabella won the MCA seat for Angata Nanyukie Ward during the by-elections held on 27th November 2025, representing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
This election followed the tragic death of the previous MCA, Paul Leshimpiro, who was shot and killed by armed bandits in Samburu County in 2024.
The newly elected MCA, Isabella Leshimpiro, is the widow of the late Paul Leshimpiro. She stepped into the political arena following her husband’s death, which occurred in February 2024 while he was being driven home.
Her successful election campaign saw her defeating two other contenders, earning a total of 1,235 votes.
She was closely followed by Pauline Nasieku Lenkupae of the National Agenda Party of Kenya, who received 1,000 votes, and Letoluai Loisia of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), who garnered 954 votes.
The United Democratic Alliance celebrated Isabella’s victory, praising her achievement as a testament to her dedication and commitment to serving the people of Angata Nanyukie Ward. “Congratulations to Hon.
Isabella Leshimpiro on your election as MCA for Angata Nanyokie Ward. We celebrate your well-deserved victory and wish you all the best as you serve the people of Angata Nanyokie and Samburu County under the UDA Party,” the party said in a statement shared on social media.
Isabella’s election has also received recognition from the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), which highlighted the significance of her accomplishment.
KEWOPA stated, “We congratulate Isabella Leshimpiro on her election as MCA for Angata Nanyukie, making history as the first woman ever to hold this position in Samburu County.
Your success is a powerful inspiration for women across Kenya, encouraging more female participation in leadership and politics.”
KEWOPA is a national caucus made up of women parliamentarians, including Members of the National Assembly, Senators, and County Assembly representatives.
The association plays a critical role in promoting gender equality in leadership positions and supporting women who pursue political roles.
Isabella’s election is seen as a breakthrough that not only honors the legacy of her late husband but also paves the way for increased female representation in Samburu County and beyond.
