Popular betting company Pepeta has strengthened its bond with Western Kenya’s grassroots culture and local sports community after successfully organizing a vibrant and highly attended traditional bullfighting tournament in Kakamega County.

The cultural event, held on November 14 and 15, showcased Pepeta’s growing involvement in regional activities and built on the excitement created by the company’s first Iwake Fest grassroots football competition.

This latest tournament marked a major step in its mission to support, preserve, and promote local traditions.

For two energetic days, life in Kakamega County slowed down as thousands of residents and visitors came together to honour a tradition that has been part of the region for generations.

The atmosphere remained lively and colourful from morning to evening, with drums beating loudly, crowds cheering with excitement, and people dancing proudly under the warm sunlight.

More than 10,000 supporters turned up to witness the thrilling matches, while hundreds waved colourful placards and joined in the traditional chants that kept the excitement high throughout the two-day event.

During the celebration, Pepeta interacted with several bull owners who shared personal stories about their upbringing, the cultural rituals they learned from their elders, and the strong emotional connection they have with their bulls.

Many spoke about the honour and responsibility that comes with raising a champion bull, describing it as a symbol of family heritage and community pride.

In Kakamega, bullfighting is not just a competition. For many residents, it represents a deep cultural identity rooted in bravery, unity, friendly rivalry, and longstanding traditions that have shaped the community over time.

Pepeta’s involvement was driven by the desire to keep this heritage alive, ensuring that younger generations continue to understand and appreciate the significance of the practice.

The company also aimed to use the tournament as a platform to bring people together for a positive shared experience, while giving passionate bull owners a stage to proudly showcase their animals.

The event has quickly become one of the most memorable cultural celebrations of the year, with many locals describing it as a powerful “homecoming of culture.”

Pepeta also made history as the first betting firm to introduce betting odds on a bullfighting event, adding an exciting twist for spectators who wanted to feel more involved in the action. This move increased engagement and gave fans a new way to participate in the tradition.

Moving forward, Pepeta has promised to continue supporting and uplifting the sport. The company emphasized that it plans to work closely with all stakeholders to create a better experience for everyone involved—from the dedicated bull owners to the enthusiastic spectators—ensuring that the event remains entertaining, beneficial, and meaningful to the community.
