Several Feared Dead, Others Injured After Matatu Overturns in Busia
Four people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after a matatu they were travelling in lost control and overturned in Bumala, Busia County, on Friday, December 5.
The tragic crash has left families in shock as rescue teams and authorities continue to piece together what happened.
The accident occurred in the Wakhungu area of Nangina Ward, within the Funyula constituency, as the matatu was heading from Bumala town towards Port Victoria.
Witnesses reported that the journey appeared normal until the vehicle suddenly veered off the road before rolling multiple times.
Samia Sub-County OCPD Richard Moracha confirmed the fatalities and stated that police officers have already launched investigations to uncover the exact circumstances that led to the deadly crash.
He appealed to motorists to remain extra vigilant during the festive season when traffic is usually heavier and road risks increase.
Images seen by Newshub.co.ke show the matatu completely wrecked, with its frame twisted and windows shattered. Local residents quickly gathered at the scene to assist, helping rescue teams pull out the injured and recover the bodies.
According to the OCPD, the victims who lost their lives include the driver, a woman, and two men. Those who survived with injuries were rushed to Nangina Mission Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Early reports indicate that the vehicle may have suffered a burst front tyre, which caused the driver to lose control. However, police officers cautioned that this is only a preliminary assessment.
A full investigation is still underway to determine the exact sequence of events and identify any additional factors that may have contributed to the crash, including mechanical issues or speeding.
This tragic incident comes at a time when the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS) have heightened road patrols and enforcement checks as thousands of Kenyans travel home for the holidays.
The agencies are working to reduce the number of accidents that tend to rise sharply during this period.
As part of their safety measures, NTSA has been subjecting drivers flagged for violations—either through road enforcement teams or the NTSA Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS)—to mandatory re-testing. The re-tests aim to verify whether drivers still meet the required competency standards.
The IRSMS, launched in 2023, is a major component of NTSA’s festive season safety strategy. The digital system monitors various aspects of vehicle and driver performance, including speed, braking patterns, route compliance, and general road behaviour.
When it detects violations such as reckless overtaking or speeding, the system immediately issues alerts.
Because the IRSMS also analyses repeated violations and identifies high-risk drivers, NTSA can follow up with targeted retraining and other corrective measures. The goal is to improve long-term road safety and reduce avoidable tragedies like the one witnessed in Busia.
Road safety agencies continue to urge Kenyans to be cautious, avoid overloading, ensure vehicles are well maintained, and observe speed limits to prevent further loss of life during the festive season.
