Kiambu MCAs Clarify Plans to Impeach Wamatangi

Kiambu MCAs Dismiss Claims of Plan to Impeach Governor Wamatangi

Members of the Kiambu County Assembly (MCAs) have come out strongly to dismiss reports claiming that there are active plans to impeach Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

The legislators insisted that no such process is ongoing and reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the governor to ensure smooth service delivery for the people of Kiambu County.

Speaking to the media outside the county assembly on Wednesday, January 21, the Assembly Majority Leader, Geoffrey Mucheke, rubbished the impeachment claims, describing them as false and misleading.

He said the MCAs remain focused on supporting the county leadership rather than engaging in political battles that could derail development.

Mucheke laughed off the allegations, noting that those spreading the impeachment narrative were doing so with ill intentions. He emphasized that the MCAs, who constitutionally have the power to initiate or block an impeachment, have no interest in pursuing such a move against Governor Wamatangi.

“We have heard from some quarters that there are plans to bring an impeachment motion to the assembly. We are the members who can make or break an impeachment, and we are not interested in any such process,” Mucheke said.

He added that the assembly fully supports the governor despite the challenges he is facing. “We want to assure the people of Kiambu that our governor is not going anywhere. We know he is being prosecuted, but we will stand with him. There will be no impeachment in this county government,” he stated.

The media briefing was attended by around 80 out of the 87 MCAs, a show of unity that they said was meant to send a clear message of support to the governor. The MCAs used the occasion to publicly affirm their confidence in Wamatangi’s leadership and to dismiss any internal divisions within the assembly.

However, the MCAs admitted that there have been attempts by unnamed individuals to push for the governor’s removal from office. They revealed that as much as Ksh 100 million was allegedly set aside to influence the impeachment process.

Despite these claims, the legislators maintained that no amount of money could sway them into supporting an impeachment motion against the governor.

Kiambu County Deputy Speaker John Njiru disclosed that the MCAs had gone a step further by signing a confidence motion in support of Governor Wamatangi. He said the motion was formally tabled in the assembly on Wednesday and would effectively block any impeachment attempts for the next six months.

Njiru warned any MCAs who might be planning to introduce an impeachment motion to reconsider their position, stating that the assembly would not tolerate intimidation or political pressure aimed at destabilizing the county leadership.

“We have signed a confidence letter with the governor, and it will last for six months. If anyone wants to table an impeachment motion, they should wait until the six months are over,” Njiru said.

He further challenged those allegedly plotting the impeachment to openly present their case in the assembly instead of working behind the scenes. Njiru stressed that the MCAs would not remain silent while their governor is being threatened or undermined.

Governor Wamatangi has faced impeachment threats almost since the start of his term. The first attempt emerged in 2023, just months after he assumed office. At the time, some MCAs staged demonstrations at the county headquarters, accusing the governor of failing to engage them and of delaying the rollout of development projects across the county.

In October 2025, fresh impeachment claims surfaced following a prolonged strike by county doctors and health workers. Reports at the time alleged that the industrial action contributed to the deaths of more than 150 infants, further fueling political tension within the county.

The latest impeachment rumours are reportedly linked to an ongoing investigation involving the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). However, Governor Wamatangi has previously accused certain legislators from Kiambu of deliberately spreading impeachment threats as part of a wider political scheme against his administration.

Despite the challenges, the MCAs insist that they remain united behind the governor and are focused on ensuring stability, continuity, and effective service delivery for the residents of Kiambu County.
