Kenya Met Forecasts Weekend Rains in Four Regions as Cold Nights Expected in Several Areas
The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that several parts of the country are likely to receive rainfall this weekend, even as many regions continue to experience mainly sunny and dry weather conditions.
According to the latest five-day weather outlook covering the period from Friday, February 6 to Tuesday, February 10, rainfall is expected in selected areas within Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the South-Eastern lowlands.
In its advisory, Kenya Met explained that the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, together with the Lake Victoria Basin and sections of the wider Rift Valley region, are likely to experience showers and occasional thunderstorms.
These rains are expected to occur mostly during the afternoon and evening hours when cloud formation is stronger. However, some areas within these regions may also receive light rainfall during the early morning hours or at night, particularly towards the last three days of the forecast period.
Counties expected to be affected by these weather conditions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.
Residents in these areas have been advised to remain prepared for sudden changes in weather, especially where thunderstorms may occur in the evenings.
In Central Kenya, weather conditions are expected to remain generally calm, with mornings starting off cloudy before giving way to sunny intervals as the day progresses.
Kenya Met has indicated that a few areas within this region could still experience occasional showers, mainly in the afternoon and during nighttime hours.
Counties likely to experience this pattern include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi.
Meanwhile, the South-Eastern lowlands are forecast to experience mostly sunny mornings followed by isolated rainfall later in the day. Kenya Met noted that although rainfall in this region will not be widespread, some areas may receive short showers in the afternoons and at night.
Counties expected to experience these conditions include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta.
The meteorological department further stated that most other parts of the country, especially the North-Eastern region and large sections of the Coast, will remain largely sunny and dry throughout the forecast period.
However, a few coastal areas could still record isolated showers from time to time, although these are not expected to be widespread or heavy.
Temperature Advisory and Cold Nights Expected
Alongside the rainfall forecast, Kenya Met has also issued a temperature advisory warning residents to prepare for cold nights, particularly in Central Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley.
Nighttime temperatures in these areas are expected to drop significantly, leading to chilly conditions that may be uncomfortable for many residents.
The coldest temperatures are expected in Central Kenya, where counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi are likely to record night temperatures ranging between 6°C and 8°C.
These temperatures are expected to make the region one of the coldest in the country during the forecast period.
Similarly, parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin will also experience cold nights.
Counties including Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Kisii and Kakamega are expected to record nighttime temperatures dropping to about 8°C.
Residents in these areas have been advised to dress warmly, especially during the night and early morning hours, as the cold conditions are expected to persist through the weekend.
