NPS Dismisses Claims of Senior Police Officers’ Transfer to Nairobi Over Nandi Hills Incident
The National Police Service (NPS) has strongly denied reports circulating on social media claiming that several senior police officers linked to the Nandi Hills pool table incident had been transferred to new stations in Nairobi.
The service described the reports as false and misleading, urging members of the public to rely only on official communication channels for accurate information.
The claims gained wide attention online after being linked to a social media post attributed to Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei. In the post, it was alleged that a number of officers connected to the controversial incident had been moved to different police stations within Nairobi.
According to the claims, the alleged transfers included the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) for Tinderet, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) for Songoh, the OCS for Nandi Hills, and the Officer in Charge of the RDU Songoh Camp.
The post further suggested that the officers had been reassigned to various stations such as Lang’ata Sub-County, Central Police Station, Pangani Police Station, and the Special Guard Branch.
The senator expressed surprise at the alleged actions, arguing that instead of being transferred or promoted, the officers should have faced demotion and disciplinary measures.
He also accused the Inspector General of Police of misleading the public, a claim that quickly spread across social media platforms and sparked public debate.
However, in an official statement issued from the National Police Service Headquarters, the Office of the Inspector General clarified that no such transfers or secondments had been approved or communicated through official NPS procedures.
The service categorically labelled the circulating information as fake news, emphasizing that any official changes involving police officers are always formally announced through recognized NPS communication channels.
The NPS further explained that the ongoing administrative actions following the Nandi Hills incident are focused on ensuring accountability among local commanders responsible for supervision and oversight.
The service reiterated that command responsibility remains a fundamental principle in policing, meaning that officers in leadership positions are expected to take full responsibility for the conduct of officers operating under their command.
The NPS stressed that misconduct within the service will not be tolerated and that disciplinary processes must follow established procedures.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja had earlier confirmed that action would be taken against several officers in charge of command roles in the affected area.
These include the Sub-County Police Commander (OCPD) for Tinderet, the Officer Commanding Station for Songoh, the Officer Commanding Station for Nandi Hills, the Officer in Charge of RDU Songoh Camp, as well as officers overseeing the GSU and ASTU units stationed at Songoh Camp.
According to the Inspector General, the measures were necessary to reinforce accountability and restore public confidence in policing standards.
The administrative action followed the emergence of a disturbing CCTV video recorded at a pool table venue in Nandi Hills.
The footage showed police officers allegedly harassing young people at the entertainment joint, an incident that triggered public outrage and raised concerns about police conduct.
In response, the Inspector General immediately directed the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) to carry out a thorough and independent investigation into the matter.
After reviewing the investigation findings, the Inspector General accepted the recommendations made by the Internal Affairs Unit and authorized administrative action against officers responsible for command and oversight within the area where the incident occurred.
The police service stated that the steps taken were aimed at ensuring accountability while also reinforcing discipline within the ranks.
The National Police Service also expressed regret over the incident in Nandi Hills and extended its sympathies to the individuals affected.
The service reaffirmed its commitment to handling all cases of misconduct firmly and in accordance with the law, assuring the public that professionalism and respect for citizens remain central to policing duties.
At the same time, the NPS reminded all officers of their responsibility as custodians of public safety, security, and property.
The service emphasized that officers are expected to maintain high standards of professionalism at all times, noting that public trust depends heavily on the conduct and discipline of police officers while carrying out their duties.
