LIVE: Sifuna, Winnie Odinga Respond After ODM Fallout as Oburu Faces Fresh Political Storm
A major political storm has erupted inside the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna rejected his removal as Secretary General and openly challenged decisions linked to party leadership under Oburu Odinga.
The developments have triggered strong reactions from Sifuna and EALA MP Winnie Odinga, exposing deep divisions within the party.
What Happened: Sifuna Ousted, Crisis Escalates
The ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) recently resolved to remove Edwin Sifuna from his position as Secretary General, citing indiscipline and internal disagreements over party direction.
The decision followed a high-level meeting in Mombasa chaired by Oburu Odinga, who is currently acting as party leader.
However, Sifuna immediately rejected the decision, insisting that he remains the duly elected Secretary General and describing the process as illegal and unconstitutional. He argued that he was never given a chance to respond to allegations against him and announced plans to challenge the move in court.
The dispute is part of a wider power struggle within ODM, largely centred on disagreements over the party’s political direction and its relationship with President William Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sifuna Fires Back at Oburu Faction
Speaking after the announcement, Sifuna accused a section of the party leadership of attempting to silence dissenting voices. He linked his removal to his strong opposition to any plan for ODM to support President Ruto’s re-election, saying that stance had made him a target within the party.
He maintained that the leadership changes were carried out without following party constitutional procedures and vowed to continue mobilising supporters, signalling that the political battle would extend beyond internal meetings into public rallies and legal processes.
Winnie Odinga’s Position and Response
Winnie Odinga has publicly appeared alongside Sifuna during the fallout, showing solidarity with the faction opposing the leadership changes. Her earlier statements on internal ODM disputes emphasised that leadership transitions must follow proper party procedures, warning against hurried or unconstitutional decisions.
Her alignment with Sifuna highlights the growing divide between younger leaders and the party’s old guard, a conflict that has increasingly defined ODM politics in recent months.
Is Oburu Launching a New Party?
As of now, credible reports do not confirm that Oburu Odinga has officially launched a new political party. The current situation mainly revolves around internal ODM leadership wrangles, factional battles, and competing political initiatives within the party rather than a confirmed party split or new party registration.
Some political initiatives and rival mobilisation efforts have emerged from different factions, deepening tensions, but the dispute remains largely an internal ODM power struggle.
What This Means for ODM Going Forward
The open confrontation between Sifuna’s camp and the Oburu-led faction signals one of the most serious internal crises ODM has faced in years.
Analysts say the conflict reflects a broader generational and ideological struggle — between leaders pushing for a more aggressive opposition stance and those favouring political cooperation and realignment ahead of 2027.
With both sides refusing to back down, the dispute could reshape ODM’s leadership structure and influence future political alliances in Kenya’s opposition politics.
