Former Kenya Navy Commander Aboud Abdallah Awadh Rafraouf Dies
Former Commander of the Kenya Navy, Aboud Abdallah Awadh Rafraouf, has passed away, bringing to an end the life of a military officer remembered for his long service and dedication to the country.
His death was confirmed on Sunday, February 15, by former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar. According to the statement, the retired commander died on Saturday, February 14.
Details surrounding his death have not yet been made public, and the cause of his passing remains unclear. As of now, no official communication has been issued giving further information about the circumstances leading to his death, leaving many within military and political circles mourning while awaiting more details.
In his tribute, Omar described Rafraouf as a disciplined and honourable officer who dedicated his life to serving the nation. He noted that the former commander belonged to a generation of military leaders who played an important role in shaping and strengthening Kenya’s defence institutions during critical moments in the country’s history.
According to him, Rafraouf’s leadership reflected strong values of patriotism, responsibility, and commitment to duty.
Omar further stated that Rafraouf’s contribution went beyond his official role, noting that he helped build and strengthen one of the country’s most important security institutions at a time when Kenya was focusing on improving its maritime security and coastal defence.
He also extended condolences to Rafraouf’s family, friends, and colleagues within the Kenya Defence Forces, acknowledging the loss as one deeply felt across the defence community.
Rafraouf served as Commander of the Kenya Navy from May 2, 1998, until November 30, 2001. He became the seventh commander of the naval service after taking over from Joseph Kibwana. Following the completion of his term, he was succeeded by Omudho Awitta, marking the transition to a new leadership period within the Navy.
After concluding his tenure as commander, Rafraouf retired from active military service in 2002, ending what many described as a distinguished and respected career within the armed forces.
During his time in leadership, he was among senior officers credited with strengthening the operational capacity of the Kenya Navy, improving naval preparedness, and supporting efforts aimed at enhancing security along Kenya’s coastline.
His passing marks the loss of a former military leader whose career spanned important years in the development of Kenya’s naval defence, and whose service continues to be remembered by those who worked alongside him and the institutions he helped shape.
