Governor Irungu Kang’ata Injured in Nairobi, to Stay Off Physical Duties for One Month
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has sustained a heel tendon injury following an accident that occurred in Nairobi on Wednesday, February 18. The Murang’a County Government confirmed that the incident happened while the governor was attending an international meeting in the capital.
In an official statement, the county government explained that Governor Kang’ata had travelled to Nairobi to take part in a meeting organized by Nutrition International, a Canadian government-supported organization that partners with different countries to improve nutrition and strengthen public health programs. During the event, the governor reportedly tripped and injured his heel tendons.
“Murang’a County Government wishes to inform the public that H.E. Gov. Irungu Kang’ata was today attending a Nutritional International meeting in Nairobi when he unfortunately tripped and sustained an injury to his heel tendons,” the statement read.
Following the incident, the governor underwent medical examination and assessment. Doctors confirmed that the injury will require rest and limited movement to allow proper healing.
As a result, he has been advised to stay away from physical office engagements and public appearances for approximately one month.
Medical experts recommended that he avoids activities that may strain his foot in order to prevent further complications and ensure a full recovery.
The county government assured residents that although Governor Kang’ata will not be physically present in office during this period, he will continue to discharge his duties remotely.
Starting next week, he is expected to participate in official meetings and county matters virtually to ensure that service delivery continues without interruption.
During his temporary absence from physical functions, Deputy Governor Stephen Munania will represent him in official engagements that require physical presence.
The county emphasized that this arrangement is in line with leadership structures provided under the Constitution and county governance frameworks.
In addition, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Prof. Kiari, will take on designated responsibilities whenever necessary to support smooth operations within the county administration.
This collaborative leadership approach is meant to guarantee that county programs, development projects, and public services continue as planned despite the governor’s short-term absence.
Governor Kang’ata had been scheduled to oversee the operationalisation of Mabae Dispensary in Gatanga and Karinga Dispensary in Kigumo.
He has consistently emphasized that opening and fully equipping these health facilities is essential to ensure that public funds invested in the projects deliver tangible benefits to residents.
According to the county, these plans will still move forward under the guidance of the deputy governor and relevant county officials.
Under the Constitution of Kenya 2010, executive authority at the county level remains active through delegated leadership.
This legal framework allows the deputy governor and other designated officials to step in when necessary to ensure continuity in governance and uninterrupted service delivery.
The county government also thanked residents for their messages of support and goodwill. Leaders expressed confidence that the governor will recover fully and resume his normal physical duties after the recommended rest period.
