The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced a major leadership change following the appointment of Nashon Kondiwa as its new Director General.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, February 18, through an official notice issued by the authority, confirming that Kondiwa’s contract will run for a period of three years starting February 17.
According to the notice, the appointment was made after consultations between the NTSA Board of Directors and Davis Chirchir, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport.
The board expressed confidence in Kondiwa’s ability to guide the authority forward, noting that his experience and understanding of the transport sector will play a key role in strengthening NTSA’s operations and improving service delivery across the country.
Kondiwa takes over from Angela Wanjira, who has been serving as Acting Director General since November 2025. She stepped into the role following the exit of George Njao, whose tenure came to an end after serving the maximum two terms allowed at the authority.
During the transition period, Wanjira oversaw the authority’s daily operations while awaiting the appointment of a substantive director general.
Before rising to the top position, Kondiwa served as NTSA’s Deputy Director for Information Communication Technology (ICT), a role he held from April 2021. During his time in the ICT department, he played a central role in driving digital transformation within the authority.
His work focused on modernising NTSA systems, improving online service delivery, and supporting the adoption of intelligent transport technologies aimed at enhancing efficiency and transparency in the transport sector.
Kondiwa brings with him more than 22 years of professional experience in ICT, innovation, public sector leadership, and intelligent transport systems.
His background is expected to support NTSA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety measures, streamline transport management systems, and improve coordination between stakeholders in Kenya’s road transport sector.
In his new role as Director General, Kondiwa will provide overall strategic leadership to the authority as it continues to implement its mandate of managing road transport and promoting safety on Kenyan roads. He will serve as the chief executive officer of NTSA and also act as secretary to the board of directors.
His responsibilities will include supervising the authority’s daily operations, overseeing staff and administrative functions, and ensuring that decisions made by the board are properly implemented by management.
The Director General also serves as the main link between the board and the authority’s management team, ensuring smooth communication and accountability in executing policies and programs.
This position carries significant responsibility, especially at a time when road safety and efficient transport management remain key national concerns.
To qualify for appointment as NTSA Director General, candidates are required to hold a Master’s degree in fields such as Engineering, Business Management, Science, Technology, Commerce, Law, or other related disciplines from a recognised university.
In addition, candidates must have at least 15 years of professional experience in either the public or private sector, with a minimum of five years served in senior management positions.
These requirements are intended to ensure that the office is held by individuals with strong leadership experience and technical expertise necessary to guide the authority effectively.
