Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, has confirmed that his brother-in-law, Geoffrey Adjiki, was found in Machakos several days after he reportedly went missing following an alleged arrest by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Update: Released at 4am and Dropped in Machakos
In a statement issued early Friday morning, Babu Owino revealed that Adjiki was released in the early hours of the day.
“My brother-in-law was released at 4am and dropped off in Machakos,” the legislator said, expressing relief that he had finally been located after days of uncertainty and anxiety.
According to the MP, the circumstances surrounding the release remain unclear, especially considering that the family had been unable to trace him since Tuesday afternoon. The discovery of Adjiki in Machakos has raised fresh questions about what transpired between the time of his reported arrest and his release.
Alleged Arrest and Sudden Disappearance
Babu Owino had earlier claimed that his brother-in-law was apprehended on Tuesday, February 17, at around 4pm. He alleged that six officers from the DCI picked up Adjiki and informed him that he was being taken to the Nairobi Area Police Headquarters.
The MP said Adjiki personally called him during the incident to inform him about the arrest. During that call, Adjiki reportedly stated that he was in the custody of DCI officers and was being driven toward Nairobi.
Immediately after receiving the distress call, Babu rushed to the Nairobi Area Police Headquarters in an attempt to locate him. However, after searching the entire premises and making inquiries, he said there was no record or sign of Adjiki at the facility.
The MP further revealed that shortly after the initial phone call, Adjiki’s phone went off and all attempts to reach him were unsuccessful. From that moment, the family had no communication with him, deepening fears about his safety.
Claims of Threats from a Powerful Official
According to Babu Owino, the disappearance occurred just one day after he had met with Adjiki face-to-face. During that meeting, Adjiki allegedly disclosed that he had been receiving serious and targeted threats from a powerful Principal Secretary (PS) in government.
The legislator claimed that his brother-in-law had specifically named the PS as the source of the threats. He alleged that the official had openly vowed to ruin Adjiki and destroy his businesses.
Babu Owino described the situation as politically motivated, linking it to internal tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He argued that the actions were meant to intimidate members associated with the Linda Mwananchi faction within the party.
Political Tensions and Upcoming Rally
The MP claimed that the matter is connected to the Linda Mwananchi movement, a faction he says includes leaders such as Edwin Sifuna and James Orengo, among others.
The controversy has emerged just days before a planned Linda Mwananchi rally scheduled to take place in Kakamega on February 22. Despite the alleged intimidation and threats, Babu Owino insisted that the rally will proceed as planned.
He further alleged that the same Principal Secretary is coordinating the movement of hired groups from Kisumu to Kakamega with the intention of causing chaos during the rally. According to him, these individuals are allegedly being paid to disrupt the event and intimidate ordinary citizens who plan to attend.
Allegations of Past Incidents
Babu Owino also linked the official to a previous incident involving the vandalism of his pier system infrastructure in Kitengela. He claimed that individuals involved in that incident were allegedly paid between Ksh1,000 and Ksh2,000 each to carry out the destruction.
The MP maintained that these actions form part of a broader scheme to silence and intimidate political opponents within ODM and beyond.
A Public Challenge and Demand for Due Process
In a bold and defiant tone, Babu Owino publicly challenged the unnamed Principal Secretary to appear in Kakamega on the day of the rally if he believes in his position.
“I want you to come to Kakamega yourself,” the MP said, daring the official openly.
He also demanded that if there were any charges against his brother-in-law, he should have been presented before a competent court of law without delay.
According to Babu, due process must be followed, and no individual should be detained or held without legal justification.
“If there’s any charge against my brother-in-law, present him before a competent court of law. We will be there,” he stated firmly.
Now that Adjiki has been found and reportedly released, questions remain about the circumstances of his arrest, the period of his disappearance, and the reasons behind his alleged detention.
The incident has added to the growing political tension ahead of the upcoming rally, with supporters and critics closely watching how authorities will respond.
