An ongoing exhumation exercise in Kericho has revealed a shocking discovery of 33 bodies buried at a site that was initially believed to contain only 14 graves.
The new findings have raised serious concern among residents and authorities, as the scale of the situation appears far more serious than earlier reports had suggested.
According to updated information from officials involved in the operation, the bodies recovered include both adults and children. What has caused even greater alarm is that a large number of the victims are believed to be minors.
Reports indicate that out of the 33 bodies exhumed so far, 25 are underage, while only 8 are adults. Many of the underage victims are said to be teenagers and young children, making the discovery even more disturbing to the public.
Authorities are now under pressure to provide clear answers, as Kenyans wait for an official statement to explain what exactly happened and how so many bodies ended up buried at the site.
The situation has sparked nationwide attention, with many people demanding transparency and accountability.
Earlier in the day, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) began the exhumation process after receiving reports of suspected mass graves in the area.
The operation was closely supervised by the Director of Homicide, Martin Nyuguto, alongside a government pathologist representing Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.
As the bodies were being removed from the graves, government pathologists immediately began examining the remains on-site.
Their main goal is to determine the possible causes of death and establish whether there was any foul play involved. These examinations are expected to play a key role in guiding the direction of the investigation.
The discovery has deeply shaken the local community in Kericho. Residents have expressed fear, confusion, and anger over the incident, with many struggling to understand how such a large number of bodies could be buried without raising alarm earlier.
The situation has created tension in the area, as families worry about the possibility of missing relatives being among the victims.
On Sunday, March 22, the National Police Service confirmed that it had officially launched investigations following the discovery of the suspected mass graves at the cemetery.
Initial reports suggested that the bodies may have been transferred from Nyamira District Referral Hospital after remaining unclaimed in the morgue for a long period.
Although early findings did not immediately point to clear criminal activity, detectives have already taken action by arresting two individuals to assist with the investigation.
Those detained include a public health officer from Nyamira Hospital and the cemetery caretaker.
Authorities have secured a 30-day detention period for the suspects as investigations continue, allowing detectives enough time to gather evidence and establish the truth.
The case first came to light on Saturday when two grave diggers working at the cemetery made the disturbing discovery.
While carrying out their normal duties, they noticed something unusual about certain burial spots. After taking a closer look, they uncovered the graves and quickly reported the matter to Kericho Police Station.
In their statements, the grave diggers revealed that earlier in the week, a group of unidentified individuals had visited the cemetery and held a private discussion with the caretaker.
According to the workers, the meeting appeared suspicious and out of the ordinary.
The individuals later left without clearly explaining their intentions, raising concerns that the interaction may be linked to the burial of the bodies.
As investigations continue, the focus now remains on uncovering the full truth behind the mass graves.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates once forensic examinations are complete and more evidence is gathered.
For now, the country watches closely as one of the most disturbing discoveries in recent times unfolds.
