‘We Could Have Lost Tuju in Just Minutes’ – Kalonzo Recounts Tense Night at Karen Police Station
Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju came dangerously close to losing his life on Monday evening, according to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who described the incident as a frightening and emotional ordeal.
Speaking before a court on Tuesday, March 24, Kalonzo revealed that Tuju’s blood sugar levels dropped sharply to a critical level of 1.9. Medical experts often consider such levels extremely dangerous, and without urgent treatment, the situation can quickly become fatal.
Kalonzo told the court that doctors warned them Tuju could have died within minutes if he had not received immediate medical attention.
“The sugar level had dropped to 1.9. At some point, we were even informed that we might lose him because of how low it was. Honestly, we could have lost Tuju in less than five minutes,” Kalonzo stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
While appearing before the Kibra Law Courts, Kalonzo—who is part of Tuju’s legal team—gave a detailed account of the events that unfolded on Monday evening.
This was shortly after Tuju resurfaced following public concern and speculation that he may have been abducted.
Kalonzo explained that despite Tuju showing visible signs of deteriorating health, police officers at the station allegedly refused to allow him to go to the hospital.
He criticized the authorities for what he described as a lack of urgency and humanity, saying Tuju’s condition was clearly worsening at the time.
He further questioned the manner in which Tuju was arrested. According to him, Tuju had just finished addressing the media to explain where he had been for the past 36 hours when officers suddenly moved in and forcefully placed him into a police vehicle. The abrupt arrest raised concerns, especially given Tuju’s fragile health at the time.
Kalonzo also revealed that he had personally driven Tuju to the Karen Police Station in good faith so that he could record a statement with the police.
However, instead of being treated as a cooperating individual, Tuju was allegedly arrested on the spot, with officers threatening to transfer him to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters.
As events unfolded, Tuju was unable to attend the scheduled court session. His lawyers informed the court that his condition had worsened significantly while he was still in police custody.
They disclosed that he had since been rushed to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was receiving specialized treatment.
Kalonzo later confirmed that Tuju had been admitted to The Karen Hospital, where doctors were closely monitoring his condition. This, he said, explained why Tuju could not physically appear in court.
Meanwhile, Director of Criminal Investigations boss Amin Mohamed addressed the matter publicly, offering the police’s version of events.
During a press briefing, he stated that investigations carried out by authorities painted a different picture from the one initially presented.
According to Amin, detectives established that Tuju had not been missing or abducted as earlier feared. Instead, they concluded that he had remained at his residence throughout the entire period in question.
“After the family initially failed to cooperate, the National Police Service treated the matter with urgency and escalated it. A joint team of officers was deployed to secure the residence late into the night,” Amin explained.
He further added, “Our investigations confirmed that Tuju was at his home the entire time. Even during the period when his phone was switched off, he never left the residence.”
The incident has sparked debate and concern among Kenyans, especially regarding the handling of individuals in police custody and the importance of prioritizing medical emergencies.
Questions continue to be raised about whether Tuju’s life was unnecessarily put at risk during the ordeal.
