The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather alert urging Kenyans in different parts of the country to prepare for a period of moderate to heavy rainfall expected over the next five days.
According to the advisory released on Friday, March 27, the rains are likely to continue until Tuesday, March 31, affecting a wide range of regions across the country.
In its latest forecast, Kenya Met highlighted that the areas expected to receive the heaviest rainfall include Central Kenya, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of Northeastern Kenya.
Residents living in these regions have been advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions, especially in areas that are prone to flooding.
Counties in the Western region, the Rift Valley, and those surrounding the Lake Victoria Basin are expected to experience particularly intense rainfall.
These include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia. Other counties likely to be affected are Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
Similar weather conditions are also expected in Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. Residents in these areas should be cautious, as heavy downpours may disrupt normal activities such as transport and farming.
In Central Kenya, the forecast shows that counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi will experience moderate rainfall over the same period.
While the rains in these areas may not be as intense as in the western parts, they are still expected to be consistent and could affect daily routines, especially in urban centres where drainage systems are sometimes overwhelmed.
Kenya Met further explained that most regions will experience a mix of sunny and cloudy conditions during the mornings. However, as the day progresses, rainfall is expected to develop in the afternoon and may extend into the evening hours.
In regions such as Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin, the rains are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms. This raises concerns about possible flooding, lightning, and strong winds, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, including areas around the Tana Delta, are also expected to receive moderate rainfall.
Although the rains in these coastal regions may not be as heavy as those in the western parts of the country, residents should still remain cautious, particularly in areas that often experience waterlogging.
Despite the widespread rainfall expected across many parts of the country, Kenya Met noted that the South Eastern lowlands will largely remain dry.
Areas in this region are expected to experience sunny and warm conditions throughout the five-day period, providing a contrast to the wet conditions being experienced elsewhere.
Temperature Advisory
Alongside the rainfall forecast, the meteorological department also issued a temperature advisory warning of very cold nights in parts of Central Kenya.
Temperatures in these areas are expected to drop as low as 7°C, which could be uncomfortable for many residents, especially those in high-altitude regions.
Counties likely to experience these cold night conditions include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
Residents have been advised to keep warm, especially during the night and early morning hours, and to take extra care of children, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals.
On the other hand, Kenya Met indicated that some parts of the country will continue to experience high daytime temperatures. Regions in the Coast, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya are expected to record temperatures exceeding 30°C during the day.
This means that while some parts of the country deal with cold nights and heavy rains, others will continue to experience hot and dry conditions.
Overall, the weather outlook for the coming days shows a mix of conditions across the country, with heavy rains, thunderstorms, cold nights, and high daytime temperatures all expected in different regions.
