A police officer was shot dead on Monday evening after suspected Turkana bandits ambushed a police convoy escorting prisoners in Samburu County. During the attack, eight remandees managed to escape.

The ambush happened at Charda, along the Maralal-Baragoi-South Horr road, as officers transported detainees from Maralal GK Prison to Baragoi for a mobile court session.

Marti Police Station Commander, Robert Amuke, confirmed the incident and revealed that the officer killed was a police constable who had been serving as a driver at the time of the attack.

“At around 7 PM on Monday, I received information that officers from Baragoi Police Station, who were escorting remandees, had been ambushed by suspected Turkana bandits,” Amuke told the press. He added that the officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the attack, which led to his death.

In addition to killing the officer, the bandits are believed to have stolen an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, which was missing from the scene.

Following the attack, a multi-agency security team, including officers from the Kenya Defence Forces and various police units, was deployed to the area to conduct a rescue and pursuit operation.

During the search, the team was able to locate two officers who had taken cover in a dense bush with their weapons still intact. However, two other police escort officers remained missing, along with the escaped prisoners.

Authorities have revealed that the fugitives were facing serious criminal charges, including defilement, gang defilement, illegal firearm possession, murder, and robbery with violence.

The body of the slain officer was taken to Baragoi Sub-County Hospital Morgue as investigations into the attack continue.

This dramatic escape comes just a day after another jailbreak incident on Sunday, January 26, when eight inmates broke out of Wundanyi Prison by scaling the walls and damaging the facility’s roof.

Security agencies are on high alert as they work to track down the fugitives.
